Olympic Legend Greg Louganis Getting Married to Partner Johnny Chaillot

Timothy RappJun 18, 2013

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis has announced his engagement to partner Johnny Chaillot.

From Monica Rizzo of People:

"

Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis is about to take the plunge—the marrying kind, that is. He and his partner, paralegal Johnny Chaillot, will walk down the aisle this fall, the diver tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"I finally met my soul mate—the more I fall in love with Johnny, the more I fall in love with myself. This is what the universe had in store for both of us," Louganis, 53, says.

Louganis confirmed the news on Twitter:

Louganis is the most decorated diver in Olympic history with five medals total and four golds, winning the three-meter springboard and 10-meter platform competitions back-to-back in 1984 and 1988.

His greatest accomplishment came at the 1988 Games in Seoul, when he struck his head during the preliminary round of the three-meter competition, but shockingly recovered to take home gold.

It was a particularly chilling moment for Louganis, who was at the 1983 World University Games when 21-year-old Soviet diver Sergei Chalibashvili hit his head on the platform and died after a week-long coma.

Louganis also made headlines as the first diver to receive a perfect score of 10 in international competition.

Louganis has remained busy in retirement as a diving coach, an author and even a coach on ABC's television program Splash.

He first came out as gay in 1994 at Gay Games IV, then more publicly on The Oprah Winfrey Show the next year, also announcing that he was HIV-positive. As Oprah herself noted, "That was a very big deal then."

Louganis was one of the early pioneers for gay athletes and a reason the climate has changed so that active athletes such as Jason Collins or Brittney Griner can feel supported enough to come out during their careers.

Fittingly, Louganis will be in the first class of inductions into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame. Christie DZurilla of the Los Angeles Times notes that the induction ceremony will take place in Chicago on Aug. 2.
