WWE's Vision of Entertainment and the Obsession with Dance

Tyson JonesJun 3, 2018

Brodus Clay, R-Truth and Fandango. What do these three WWE Superstars have in common? Well, if you answered an affinity for dancing before, during and after their matches, you'd be correct.

With all the dancing, you'd be hard-pressed to convince people who didn't know any better that these three men are actually pretty skilled wrestlers. It's hard to be taken as a threat when you spend the majority of your time "getting funky" with the crowd.

Still, I don't think WWE is entirely in the wrong with pushing dance for its Superstars. While it's not everyone's thing, some people like dance. I think the problem lies with WWE leaning toward the lowest common denominator in its approach to dance. Truth is, dances don't have to be wacky or embarrassing. Dancing can be cool and entertaining.

Let's take the show America's Best Dance Crew. I, personally, was really entertained when the show first started, and the seasons that followed were also entertaining. This show allowed viewers to see some incredibly difficult and at times, crazy dance moves.

If WWE could somehow (it really shouldn't be hard, but I imagine Vince doesn't quite get freestyle dance) learn to focus more on this instead of this, then I think the company could get fans to be more entertained by these types of gimmicks.

Honestly, it's not as if dance can't be incorporated and not be entertaining. WWE has made it into some sort of demonic evil for many wrestling fans, but two of the most impressive wrestlers I know of incorporate dance into their characters in some form or another, and the fans really get behind both men when they do it. Of course, I'm talking about BxB Hulk and Jack Evans.

Jack Evans, arguably the best high-flying wrestler going today, has made a name for himself by not only being able to fly through the air but blow fans away with his break-dancing ability—sometimes performing moves while his matches are taking place. One such instance occurred when Jack felt the need to get down before tussling with Samoa Joe. The crowd would respond to this by declaring that Joe had been served. Another one can be seen before his match with El Generico during their time in ROH.

BxB Hulk's performance is partly in homage to his mentor, Magnum Tokyo, who also had a pre-match dance routine of sorts, though Hulk ups the ante with the inclusion of his own BxB Dancers. Said routine does help to get the crowd excited, and I think he's a pretty good dancer, as are the beautiful young ladies that accompany him to the ring.

Don't get me wrong. Like many people, I wish WWE would tone down the dancing, too. However, I think that's about as realistic as Justin Gabriel's chances at the WWE Championship. So with that in mind, I would prefer, if WWE insists on putting "dancing" on my television, that it would at least do it in an entertaining way.
