The Shield: 5 New Tag Teams to Challenge Rollins and Reigns for the Titles

0 of 5

The Shield’s Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns did what no other tag team in WWE was able to do—defeat Team Hell No for the tag team titles. As The Shield continue their dominance over the company, are there any current tag teams that will be able to stop them?

    Probably not.

Let’s face it. The tag team division is still very weak, despite Team Hell No attempting to change that last year.

After Kane and Daniel Bryan, the division is made up of jobbers and more jobbers.

That is why I am proposing five brand new tag teams who would at least have a chance against Rollins and Reigns. Chances are The Shield will hold the titles for a lengthy period, but perhaps these teams will make fans wonder who will win.

Randy Orton and Sheamus

The Celtic Vipers, as they were once called, may not be completely brand new, but they are also not an official tag team in the WWE. Randy Orton and Sheamus have teamed up from time to time against The Shield as well as other opponents like Big Show and Mark Henry.

Orton and Sheamus are both in idle right now as they are two of the top babyfaces of the company, yet are not involved in any meaningful feud. Both Superstars were victorious in separate singles matches at Extreme Rules so they certainly have momentum.

Plus, Orton and Sheamus did save Kofi Kingston against The Shield on Friday Night SmackDown, only to lose the six-man tag match.

Big Show and Mark Henry

Speaking of Big Show and Mark Henry, the two behemoths in WWE had been dominant not long ago, but also seem to be without a meaningful feud.

Henry in particular was on a destructive path since returning from injury. His victory over Ryback at WrestleMania 29 was one of the only shocking moments of the event. Big Show also had become a bigger deal in WWE once again after signing an iron clad contract from John Laurinaitis.

Show and Henry may both be at the end of their careers, but they would make for an interesting challenge to Rollins and Reigns.

Without Ambrose there to help, how would Rollins and Reigns be able to control two huge athletes in one match?

Brothers of Destruction

3 of 5

The Hounds of Justice have already feuded with Undertaker and Kane, but only with Daniel Bryan and Dean Ambrose involved.

Since Kane and Bryan seem to be on their way to splitting up, perhaps the Big Red Machine would look to his brother again to challenge for tag team gold.

The Shield took out the Undertaker not long ago on an episode of SmackDown. The Phenom of the WWE is certainly going to look for revenge at some point in the future.

When he does, Kane will be looking for revenge of his own as Rollins and Reigns were the tag team to end the eight-month reign of Team Hell No.

John Cena and CM Punk

4 of 5

A combination of John Cena and CM Punk may strike you as odd, but it would make for a very interesting situation. Punk may return as a babyface and bring back that Stone Cold Steve Austin-style tweener gimmick we saw in June 2011.

If WWE were to provide a pair of Superstars with the best chances of ending the reign of the Shield, wouldn’t Cena and Punk be on that list?

Cena is the WWE’s golden boy who has a history of ending groups such as the Nexus. Cena was the first one to defeat The Shield as a group in the six-man elimination tag match a couple weeks ago on Raw.

While some may argue that Punk is best suited to be a heel, remember that he is still one of the most popular Superstars on the roster. After holding the WWE title for over 400 days, Punk could return against The Shield.

CM Punk and Brock Lesnar

5 of 5

If WWE chooses to keep Punk as a heel and alongside Paul Heyman, Brock Lesnar would be an ideal fit as his tag team partner against The Shield.

Punk and Lesnar would appear to be a reincarnation of the Two-Man Power Trip of Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin. They would be another pair that would seem to be unstoppable. As Rollins and Reigns continue to prove to be overpowering themselves, could a new Two-Man Power Trip be the only ones to stop them?

The one issue that fans may have with Punk and Lesnar is that both they and The Shield are heels.

If Punk and Lesnar were to square off against The Shield, whom would the fans get behind? Who would they cheer for?

What tag team would you like to see challenge Rollins and Reigns for the tag team titles? What are your thoughts on my proposed pairings? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.
