Chelsea would have been foolish to not extend all-time leading goalscorer Frank Lampard's contract for one more year in the wake of his record-breaking performance against Aston Villa.

According to the Mirror's Richard Arrowsmith, the Blues and Lampard recently agreed on a one-year extension, and Lampard couldn't be more excited:

I'm absolutely delighted. Everybody knows I always maintained the dream was to stay at Chelsea. We've been talking for ages and even though it went on for quite a period it was always amicable.

I want to thank Mr Abramovich for everything he's done in making the dream a reality. I love this club, the staff, the players and especially the supporters, who have treated me fantastically since the day I arrived.

The thought of helping the club to more success in the forthcoming years is all I ever wanted. I couldn't be happier.

The veteran midfielder will turn 35 this June, and he offers Chelsea a durable and consistent option that it can count on next season. Lampard isn't the 20-plus goalscorer he was a few years ago in his prime, but he can still finish around the box and create chances for his teammates.

His 18 goals in 53 appearances for the club this season are third most. He's also recorded eight assists over that time.

Lampard scored his 202nd and 203rd career goals for Chelsea Saturday at Villa Park, helping the Blues battle back from a 1-0 deficit to win on the road and inch even closer to a UEFA Champions League berth next season. The match-winning goal elevated Lampard above Bobby Tambling to take over the title of Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer.

In addition to the physical talents Lampard brings to Stamford Bridge, his confidence as an accomplished player and his ability to lead a squad cannot be overlooked.

For Lampard, the extension is obviously ideal based on his reaction, and not only is he familiar with the club, the players and management, but he'll also have an opportunity to help the Blues win while adding to his remarkable legacy at Chelsea.

Sure, there will come a point soon where keeping Lampard on board won't be worth the price or the risk. For now, though, the Chelsea captain is still playing tremendous football, helping lead the Blues Wednesday to the Europa League title over Benfica.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich knows what he's going to get from Lampard over the next 12 months, and Lampard now has the security needed to deliver.

Although his speed and athleticism has begun to decline, Lampard's intelligence in midfield remains. That experience, combined with his leadership traits, makes him well worth the one-year investment.
