AJ Lee is looking to follow in the footsteps of her boyfriend Dolph Ziggler and put some gold around her waist by defeating Kaitlyn for the WWE Divas title.
AJ became the No. 1 contender for the Divas Championship by winning a battle royal on Raw just a few weeks ago, and the signature win has reignited a bitter rivalry with Kaitlyn, who she once called her best friend.
In a Divas division that isn’t anywhere near as good as it was eight to 10 years ago, Kaitlyn vs. AJ has become perhaps the biggest Divas rivalry the WWE has seen over the course of the last few years.
It’s a feud that has been in the makings since 2011, when Kaitlyn and AJ became fast friends on NXT, and really picked up last year around WrestleMania 28.
Now, the rivalry is on once again, and there’s only one possible way that it will end: With AJ beating Kaitlyn to become the Divas Champion for the first time in her career.
Yes, this is a matter of when AJ will become Divas champion. Not if.
After all, there has been no Diva in recent memory who has gotten the type of push that AJ has gotten over the last year and a half. She has been one of the WWE’s most visible on-air characters since the start of 2012, and last year, her involvement in major storylines with Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Kane, Dolph Ziggler and John Cena made her arguably the breakout character of the year.
Despite having never held the Divas Championship, AJ has undoubtedly become—like Cena is on the superstar side—the “face” of the Divas division.
She has played a huge role in a ton of major storylines, received more TV time than nearly all of the other Divas combined and has become, far and away, the most popular female performer on the roster. Thus, it’s always been only a matter of time before she would become Divas champion.
Now that AJ is the No. 1 contender for the Divas title and Kaitlyn is currently holding the belt, it’s etched in stone: AJ will become the Divas champion in the near future by defeating Kaitlyn.
How soon? Well, that depends on when the WWE decides it wants to have their match take place, and when it comes to the creative team, there’s really no telling what it’ll do.
But you can bank on it happening because creative seems intent on making Ziggler’s trio carry as much gold as possible, and AJ, of course, is a key cog in that group.
Ziggler is already holding the World Heavyweight Championship, AJ is the No. 1 contender for the Divas Championship and Big E Langston laid a vicious beatdown on United States Champions Kofi Kingston just last week.
Think these three things happening at the same time is just one big coincidence? Of course not.
If there are plans for each member of Ziggler's trio to hold gold, then consider this: Ziggler’s there, AJ is halfway there, and Langston is getting there, too.
Obviously, it would put the Ziggler/Langston/AJ trio over in a major way if each of them was able to hold gold at the same time. Since Ziggler is already holding the World title, the next logical step would be for AJ to become the Divas Champion.
After all, it’s actually pretty surprising that AJ hasn’t won the Divas title at all over the last year and a half when she has gotten far more TV time than any other Diva. Then again, she has spent most of that time near the superstars and away from the Divas.
Until now, that is.
AJ is the closest she’s ever been to becoming the Divas Champion, as she’s one match away from winning the belt and firmly entrenching herself as the focal point of the division.
Yeah, AJ is already the top female performer in the WWE. But when she defeats Kaitlyn to win the Divas title for the first time, no one will be able to argue otherwise.
