The excitement of the Kentucky Derby is not limited to those in attendance at Churchill Downs. The betting aspect of horse racing allows people all over the world to get involved.

While it is optional to wear big hats and drink mint juleps on your own, fans are still excited to see who won and how much they can get for making a big bet.

This year, Orb was able to take home the roses with a great finish to separate itself from the pack. As the 5-1 favorite entering the race, it did not provide the biggest payout, although plenty of people were able to win something.

Here is a look at payouts for each scenario based on $2 bets.

Place Post Horse Win Place Show
1 16 Orb $12.80 $7.40 $5.40
2 4 Golden Soul   $38.60 $19.40
3 3 Revolutionary     $5.40

Exacta ($2 bet):  16-4 - $981.60

Trifecta: 16-4-3 - $3,462.80

Superfecta: 16-4-3-5 - $28,542.00

Orb had won four races in a row entering the event and carried that momentum over to Saturday.

Jockey Joel Rosario perfectly handled his horse in the mud and ran a great race at Churchill Downs. He started off slowly, but the horse had enough energy in the home stretch to overtake the leaders and eventually pull away from the rest of the field.

Of course, there were other impressive performances on the day. Golden Soul was a pretty big long shot entering the race after winning only one of five career starts. It finished fourth at the Louisiana Derby, which was the most competitive event the horse entered.

Still, Golden Soul appeared to do well in the mud as it finished strong to get second place. This brought a decent amount of money to those willing to bet on the underdog to either place or show.

The best long shot bet in the sport, however, is the superfecta. A bettor needs to correctly predict the spot of each of the first four horses to finish, although the payout is quite large.

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, at least one lucky person was able to hit this incredible bet:

It appears that the gambler actually selected all 120 scenarios of horses No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 16. Fortunately, it worked out and the person was able to win $28,542.

As the attention now turns to the Preakness Stakes, Orb will likely be the overwhelming favorite as it attempts to continue its quest for the Triple Crown. Based on what we have seen, this competitor is fully capable keeping up this hot streak and winning at Pimlico.

Then again, do not be afraid to bet on the long shot to get a nice payout.
