College Football Spring Practice Quick Hitters: 04/24

Todd at CollegeFootballGeek.comCorrespondent IApril 24, 2009

Another week of spring practice is in the books.  Here's some of the news coming from around the country as we head into the weekend.

The skill positions are shaping up for the Black Knights.  Chip Bowden has been named starting QB and CeDarius Williams is the top fullback on the depth chart.

Star QB Robert Griffin has elected to drop his track activities to focus solely on football.  Good news.

Boise State
WR Austin Pettis, TE Tommy Gallarda and RB D.J. Harper were singled out as “Top Spring Risers” by a writer who follows the team.  Pettis is going to be a solid fantasy WR.  Gallarda becomes one to watch.  And how will Harper’s presence affect Jeremy Avery?  That’s a pretty big question heading into August camp.

Zach Maynard appears to have won the starting QB job for the Bulls.  He is more of a dual threat than Drew Willy, which could mean some good fantasy performances - especially with WR Naaman Roosevelt and RB James Starks at his disposal.

Florida Atlantic
Word is that TE Rob Housler might redshirt this fall.  With star Jason Harmon and Jamari Grant returning, this makes sense.  Housler will have a chance to start in 2010.

Stud WR Dezmon Briscoe was reinstated to the football team.  Good news here.  Let’s hope he can stay out of trouble this summer.

Brian Anderson has taken control of the QB competition entering the final week of spring practice.

WR Jamere Holland seems to have established himself in the starting lineup.  He could be one of Jeremiah Masoli’s top targets this fall.

The Boilers could be throwing the ball quite a bit to their tight ends this fall.  In last week’s Black and Gold scrimmage. Purdue’s tight ends—Jeff Lindsay, Jeff Panfil and Crosby Wright—combined to catch 12 passes for 134 yards.  And that was with projected starter, Kyle Adams, on the bench with a minor injury.

Starting RB Christian Ramirez has missed the majority of spring ball with hamstring issues.  Derrick Coleman and Waynes Moses are fighting for the backup role.

Aaron Corp was named starter for the Trojans spring game.  He has been able to hold off youngster Matt Barkley thus far.  Mitch Mustain appears to be the odd man out in this QB race.

Due to some injuries at the position, Jonny Moore is currently taking all of the reps at tight end.  The TE position in this pass happy offense is worth watching.  With Jamar Hunt off to graduation (31-367-2), Moore could be next in line to post decent stats.

The Miners are set at WR with Jeff Moturi and Kris Adams.  Both have looked strong this spring, and are primed for a big season.

Over at RB, Vernon Frazier continues to dominate scrimmage competition.  However, for whatever reason, he is not cemented as the starter yet.  For now, he is simply a name to file away.

Virginia Tech
TE Greg Boone is quietly having a nice spring.  He won’t blow you away with his abilitiy, but Boone could be a solid No. 2 TE for those in BCS=only formats.

RB Ryan Williams has been scary good in spring ball, averaging over 11 ypc in scrimmage situations.  The Hokies will likely go with a two-back system with Williams and Darren Evans.  Evans is still the No. 1 option, but how much of the load will he carry?

Coach Sark has been very impressed with QB Jake Locker’s improvement in the accuracy department this spring.  His goal is to complete 60% of his passes this fall.  So far in practice, he’s accomplished that goal.
