At WrestleMania 29, Alberto Del Rio continued his run as World Heavyweight champion, a run that should have ended on Sunday night.
There were three possible outcomes in the World Heavyweight title match at WrestleMania. Del Rio, Jack Swagger or Dolph Ziggler could have left as champion, but WWE decided not to make a change. Ziggler could have cashed in Money in the Bank, as many expected him to do after losing the WWE tag title match. Perhaps cashing in at WrestleMania 29 would have been too obvious.
Swagger as champion would have made a ton of sense if not for his DUI arrest. His manager, Zeb Colter, is the best character on the mic next to CM Punk and Paul Heyman. Swagger has become relevant because of his manager Zeb Colter. Unfortunately, due to his terrible decisions outside the ring, Swagger could not win and was forced to have a jobber entrance at WrestleMania.
Speaking of managers, Del Rio’s failure as champion is partly due to Ricardo Rodriguez’s success and fame. When you’re manager is more over with the crowd than you are, it makes things difficult. There have been a number of occasions when WWE had the opportunity to break Del Rio away from Ricardo, but decided against it. Splitting them up would do wonders for Ricardo, but Del Rio would be lost. WWE may not see Ricardo as a world champion due to his look, but Del Rio isn’t a great champion because he is just too stale without someone like Ricardo Rodriguez.
A huge complaint when Del Rio was a top heel in WWE was that he became stale very quickly. Del Rio claimed it was his destiny to win the Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank and the WWE title. After Del Rio accomplished these things, he had nothing else to say. Now that Del Rio is a top babyface in WWE, the company would like to build him up to be the next Rey Mysterio or Eddie Guerrero. Unfortunately, Del Rio doesn’t have the charisma Mysterio and Guerrero had.
In order for Del Rio to improve as World Heavyweight Champion, he needs to be more diverse on the mic and prove he doesn’t need Ricardo Rodriguez. Del Rio has a good speaking voice, as he speaks clearly in a way that everyone can understand. However, if Ricardo was not by his side, Del Rio may not have been as successful. Prior to becoming champion, I thought Del Rio and Ricardo would join forces in the tag team division.
WWE needs to do something different with Ricardo for himself as well as Del Rio. Ricardo went through FCW and occasionally has shown on WWE TV the potential he has to be a Superstar. Putting him in a tag team with Del Rio could have been a good transition, but now WWE is stuck. Del Rio and Ricardo need to stay faces as long as Del Rio is champion.
Hopefully, Ziggler cashes in Money in the Bank sooner rather than later so WWE can have a real charismatic champion and not a failure like Alberto Del Rio.
