A Message to Reggie Theus: Start Tanking Already!
Let's get this straight, I'm a Kings fan; have been for about seven years now and would not like to see any other team win the NBA title for the nextĀ 10 years other than the Kings, but with that said, I have a few choice words for Reggie Theus.
Start the tanking already! Please!
I know that I'm going to catch some heat for this, but I DON'T CARE!
I care that the Kings end up with the best lottery pick that they can have, and right now it doesn't look good.
After last night's 99-98 win over Houston, the Kings moved to 34-40. A respectful record, for an EASTERN CONFERENCE TEAM!
If they were in that situation, every game would be exciting. They would be just a half-game behind Atlanta and would have a good enough team to reach the playoffs.
But they're not. They are long gone from the playoffs and playing the role of spoilers.
It's fun to see the Kings beat the Lakers in a meaningless game for usĀ and drive Kobe mad, but I'd rather see the Kings get a better draft pick, choose a better player, and make some noise next year.
As of right now, the Kings have a 0.7 percent chance of winning the lottery. There's a bigger chance of Ron Artest winning the "Good guy award" than the Kings hitting the jackpot.
But let's not be foolish now, even if the Kings go on a tanking run and lose their last eight games, there's no chance to get a Top 5 pick, but a pick in the 8-11 range wouldn't be too far-fetched.
As of this moment, according to ESPN's mock draft machine, the Kings fall in the 11-13 range and get either Russell Westbrook or D.J. Augustin. Thereās nothing wrong with those picks, but moving up to the 8-11 range would provide the team with many more choices.
They could go big (DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin), or small (Westbrook, Augustin) or if the pieces fall in place, they could have a chance to be on the clock with Kevin Love or Eric Gordon on the board.
Again, most of this is only speculation. They could crack the Top 8 or could fall to 14 and have to select the likes of Chase Budinger, but that is all up to the lottery. Right now all I can do is cheer for the Kings to lose as many games as possible.
