Manchester United Transfer News: Club Must Avert PSG's Interest in Wayne Rooney
The future of Wayne Rooney is setting up to become one of the offseason's biggest stories. A talking point ever since the Manchester United star was left out of the lineup for a key Champions League match, it's starting to get interesting with one club having confirmed interest.
Paris Saint-Germain, the current Ligue 1 leaders and Champions League semifinalists, are loading up for another big summer with their seemingly endless resources—Rooney is among the players they are considering, according to ESPN.
The report states PSG hasn't made any contact involving a potential move, but club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi considers the veteran England international one of the top strikers around and, concerning a Rooney deal, said, "I think everybody would like it to happen."
He's being backed up by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who told Sky Sports that PSG would be the best landing spot for Rooney should he leave United.
If he wants to be part of the best project in football then there is only one club to sign for...Only he knows the decision he is going to make in the summer but the project we are trying to build here is clear...We are not content with being the dominant force in France, we want to be the top club in Europe as well.
There's no doubt Paris Saint-Germain are a club on the rise. They already sport enough star power to hang with the top clubs in Europe, as illustrated by their draw with Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
Adding Rooney to the mix would make them even more dangerous. They are already a terrific attacking side and the longtime Red Devils star would give them an embarrassment of riches on the attack. So it's no surprise he would be on PSG's radar.
Now it's Manchester United's job to fend off that interest. Sir Alex Ferguson has already stated that Rooney will be back with the Premier League club next season, but that hasn't stopped speculation from running rampant since the loss to Real Madrid.
Lost in all the hoopla has been some really strong play from Rooney. It took some time for him to figure out how to be most effective playing alongside Robin van Persie, but it seems like the potentially dynamic duo is finally starting to develop the necessary chemistry.
Rooney scored in his last four appearances for the club and seven times in his past 10 games. That's the type of production United expected from him on a normal basis before Van Persie's arrival to take over the lead striker role.
Where will Rooney start next season?
If he can keep producing at that level and Van Persie can rediscover top form, United would have a nearly unstoppable attack. That was the plan when they signed RVP, but it hasn't fully materialized yet.
Should the club let Rooney get away, it will never have a chance to reach its full potential. That's why keeping him in the fold beyond this season, as they head toward another Champions League appearance and likely title defense, is key.
Big-spending clubs like PSG are probably going to peck around during the summer to see if Rooney could be had given all the talk about his future. It's United's job to immediately shut down those talks.
Judging by his previous comments, Ferguson appears ready to do exactly that.
