A championship scramble match for Antonio Cesaro's United States title would ratchet up the WrestleMania 29 pre-show's entertainment value.

WrestleMania 29 has huge stars and big matches on its card, but Cesaro has no match scheduled. The same goes for Kofi Kingston, Zack Ryder, Justin Gabriel, the Prime Time Players and R-Truth.

A crowded card may not have room for all those men, but the championship scramble format allows WWE to cram five guys into one match.

Cesaro is one of WWE's fastest-rising stars and already one of the company's best in-ring performers.

His ring work, his stiff uppercuts and punishing holds would add a healthy dose of wrestling-based entertainment to the hour-long WrestleMania pre-show. There isn't a clear No. 1 contender for his championship, so perhaps putting all the as-of-yet unscheduled stars into a single match is the best option.

The championship scramble starts with two wrestlers in the ring. Every five minutes on, a new superstar jumps into the fray. Each time someone gets a pinfall or submission, they become the interim champion. Whoever is interim champ when time expires becomes the official title holder.

WWE debuted the concept at Unforgiven 2008 and featured three championship scramble matches at the event.

It's not a gimmick match that should be used too often as its novelty would soon wear off, but it can be a fun, easy-to-book match WWE can use from time to time.

In this case, it allows New Yorker Zack Ryder to perform at MetLife Stadium. It allows WWE to more fully utilize its roster, showcasing the talents of men like Kingston, Titus O'Neil or R-Truth. Fans of those wrestlers will be more likely to tune into the pre-show, hoping to see their favorite beat out Cesaro for his title.

This is the kind of match that needs no previous storyline or buildup. Just plug in some athletes and let the fun begin.

Should WWE decide to keep Cesaro champion despite the unfavorable odds of the scramble match, he will be made to look even worthier of holding the belt. Post-WrestleMania, Cesaro can boast about outlasting four other men in order to remain champion.

Whoever came the closest to winning it can be the focus of Cesaro's next rivalry.

WWE has an hour to work with for its WrestleMania 29 pre-show. The Miz and Wade Barrett's battle for the Intercontinental title will take up some of that time. There's plenty of room left for more in-ring action and for more stars to shine.

A championship scramble match provides the stage for them to do just that.
