UK Basketball Recruiting: Is Kentucky Still in the Running for Aaron Gordon?

Nick NafpliotisCorrespondent IApril 1, 2013

With all the recent buzz around the Kentucky program centering around whether or not Andrew Wiggins will commit to the Wildcats, one name that members of the Big Blue Nation are thinking about is Aaron Gordon.

The 6'8" forward has superb ball-handling skills for someone his size to go along with a great ability to penetrate to the basket and dominate defensively on the block. On Monday, he released a highlight reel full of ridiculous dunks, incredible blocks and ankle breaking drives that would make any college coach in the country begin to drool.

"Unfortunately" for the Wildcats, there just might not be enough room for Gordon on the 2013-2014 roster (the word is put in quotations since it's a pretty good problem to have when you can pass on player of Gordon's caliber).

It is still unknown at this time if Alex Poythress will be back for another season. Add in the fact that John Calipari already has a loaded freshman class for next year even without Andrew Wiggins. If Wiggins commits, it will not only be arguably the greatest recruiting class in history, but it will also mean that there simply isn't space for Gordon.

When he makes his final college decision on April 3 (per Ben Roberts of Next Cats recruiting blog), Gordon will most likely stay out on the west coast with Arizona, Washington or Oregon.

Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports also tweeted out the same sentiment after speaking to people close to Gordon's recruiting, stating the Kentucky is no longer a major player for his services.

Although it's worth mentioning that you never can truly count out John Calipari when it comes to recruiting the best players in the country (of which Gordon is definitely included).

But in the very likely event that Gordon ends up on another team, the Wildcats better bring their "A game" when they go up against him.
