Why the Buckeyes Want Greg Paulus at Michigan

Kyle StrittholtApr 17, 2009

Greg Paulus, former point guard for the Duke basketball team, wants to play football. As a lot of people know, he hasn’t thrown a pass competitively in four years, and is a little small for most college quarterbacks.

He’s 6'1" and weighs 180 pounds, which is about 20 pounds less than where teams want their quarterbacks to be in college.

Duke’s football program doesn’t feel he would fit their team well for the quarterback position. Head coach David Cutliffe offered him a spot at receiver, but Paulus declined, saying he wants to play quarterback.

He is currently considering Syracuse and Michigan.

Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez has contacted Paulus about coming to play for the Wolverines, but it is doubtful that he would see much playing time as freshman Tate Forcier will likely be given the starting role.

In order for Paulus to get the starting job, he’d have to beat out Forcier this spring or hope that Forcier plays horribly during the season. It’s a whole other topic to think about him playing in Rodriguez’s spread offense, because in high school Paulus was a pocket quarterback.

I can tell you the Buckeyes are looking forward to their game against Michigan and continuing their dominance over the Wolverines in the 21st century.

If Paulus starts for Michigan, Ohio State would show him that playing basketball against North Carolina is nothing like getting sacked by one of the monsters on the Buckeye defense.

Seeing Paulus under center wouldn't just make the Buckeyes hungry, but would entice other teams like Penn State and Illinois, who also have great defenses.

It would make a great story if Paulus could successfully convert from being a point guard to a starting college quarterback, but in a conference like the Big Ten with all of its good defenses, it is very unlikely to happen.

Paulus is not a Pat White, and the Wolverines are not going to be able to outscore Terrelle Pryor and the Buckeyes. This year will continue to be full of growing pains for Michigan, which will most likely lose another one to Ohio State.

I do think the Wolverines will be better than they were last year, but I don’t think they will be a bowl-eligible team this season. Paulus or not, it’s going to be a while for the Michigan Wolverines to become the best team in the nation.
