Denver Broncos Release Elvis Dumervil After Turning in Contract After Deadline
In a shocking NFL offseason development, the Denver Broncos front office has been forced to release Elvis Dumervil after failing to turn in his paperwork on time.
UPDATE: Friday, March 15 at 7:46 p.m. ET by Michael Moraitis
Mike Klis of the Denver Post is giving us all the latest on the Broncos-Dumervil situation, including what John Elway has to say:
There's been no contact between parties since. Dumervil a free agent and he has heard from teams. Again Elway: "The bottom line is our offer
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
Elway:"didn’t change from 11 oclock, or 1 o’clock Eastern to the time they decided to take the deal. By the time they decided they did not
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
Elway: give themselves enough time to send the signed documents back to beat the 2 o’clock deadline.’’
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
Will Broncos try to re-sign Elvis? Elway:“We’re going to talk about all our options. We’re going to let things settle down, see what happens

UPDATE: Friday, March 15 at 7:10 p.m. ET by Ben Chodos
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport was able to get in touch with Elvis Dumervil's agent, Marty Magid, and reported the following quote via Twitter:
Marty Magid, Elvis' agent: ""We got the final contract at 3:42. We had to review the language, print it, fax it to my client. 12 minutes!"
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 15, 2013
More from Marty Magid: "We tried to get it done. They called me at 1:55 and said we're going to have to cut him. I said, it's coming thru"
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 15, 2013
Rapoport shared more details from Magid about the mad scramble during the failed attempt to get the paperwork filed on time:
Magid alleged the Broncos sent a deal with numbers not agreed to at 3:33 and he had to call them and get it sent again
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 15, 2013
Lastly, Rapoport noted that Dumervil's agent is already being contacted by other NFL teams looking to quickly take advantage of the Broncos' blunder:
Shocking: Marty Magid said a few teams have already called about Elvis Dumervil (No, not the Patriots… yet). Said he's open to return tho

More strange (and somewhat amusing) details continue to emerge about the events surrounding Dumervil's contract hold-up. According to Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network, Dumervil was trying to send out his part of the contract from a Kinkos in Miami:
Dumervil reportedly was trying to do his part of the deal from a Kinko's in Miami...seriously.
— Andrew Siciliano (@AndrewSiciliano) March 15, 2013
You can't make this stuff up, folks.

UPDATE: Friday, March 15 at 6:12 p.m. ET by Tim Keeney
The NFL Network's Albert Breer gave us his understanding of how the unusual events from Friday afternoon went down:
My understanding is, on top of the rest of it, Denver gave Dumervil a 1 pm MT deadline to accept the paycut. He verbally accepted at 1:25.
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) March 15, 2013
... The two sides had gone back and forth all morning. The Broncos hasn't heard from Dumervil at 1 pm, were preparing to cut him. ...
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) March 15, 2013
... Then, the call came at 1:25 pm. Broncos told Dumervil's people that fax needed to be in NY by 1:59. And that obviously didn't happen.

Meanwhile, NFL insider Jason La Canfora added this intriguing piece of information:
Marty Magid, agent for Dumervil, said he did not receive revised contract tile 3:42ET and Elvis was faxing it back at 3:55, when DEN cut him
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 15, 2013
Dumervil's agent (via La Canfora), unsurprisingly, didn't seem thrilled with the entire situation:
Marty Magid, agent for Dumervil, said he did not receive revised contract tile 3:42ET and Elvis was faxing it back at 3:55, when DEN cut him
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 15, 2013
Magid disputed part of Broncos timeline. said team changed the terms an hour before deadline, delaying things. Full story ahead @cbssports

At 1:25 p.m. MT, the talented 29-year-old defensive end reportedly agreed to restructure his current deal, according to the Denver Post's Mike Klis.
However, it was later revealed that the Broncos didn't file the contract by the 2 p.m. deadline and were forced to release Dumervil:
Hold on, contract not filed in time. Elvis Dumervil has been officially released
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
Klis added more details about the bizarre situation:
Broncos didn't get fax with Elvis Dumervil signature on contract until 2:07 p.m. -- 7 minutes and 1 second past the deadline!
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
#Broncos had to protect themselves. It was 1:59. No signed deal. Had they not released Elvis Dumervil, $12 mil would have been guaranteed
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
Moreover, it now won't be nearly as easy as just re-signing Dumervil:
Broncos could still sign Elvis Dumervil but there are salary cap implications. Not that simple.
— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013
This is an incredibly odd situation.
The Broncos desperately needed to restructure Dumervil's contract. After long deliberation, it appeared the situation was finally successfully resolved.
But for a development like this to derail the entire process, and send Dumervil to the free-agent market, is something that we have essentially never seen before.
Will Elvis Dumervil be a Denver Bronco in 2013?
Moreover, the intrigue is multiplied by the fact that the former Bronco is still a very talented, dangerous player.
The seven-year veteran out of Louisville played in all 16 games in 2012, racking up 54 combined tackles, 11 sacks and six forced fumbles.
The sacks were the third most he has ever recorded in his career, and the forced fumbles were an impressive career high.
Dumervil and youngster Von Miller were starting to establish themselves as an elite pass-rushing combo that was nearly impossible to keep out of the backfield. They were one of the major reasons why Denver was tied for first in the NFL in sacks and ranked third in passing yards allowed last season.
You can bet John Elway and the Denver front office will now tirelessly work to return Dumervil to the Mile High City.
But with his official release from the team, things are about to get extremely interesting.
