Detroit Red Wings: 3 Stars of the Week, March 11 Edition
As seems to be the norm for the Detroit Red Wings this season, they completed another up and down week. They started off the week with a good win over the Colorado Avalanche then shut out the Edmonton Oilers.
The week ended with disappointing back-to-back losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the first loss they were shutout, but in the second loss, they were at least able to manage to earn one point for the shootout loss.
They have 29 points which has them holding onto the fourth spot in the Western Conference. As tight as the conference is that only puts them two points above ninth place.
Here are the three stars of week.
Jimmy Howard had a shutout win against the Oilers and was less 90 seconds away from one against the Avalanche. The Avalanche game was very impressive as he stopped 36 of the 37 shots that he faced. The shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets spoiled what could have been three straight wins for him. (Jonas Gustavsson started one game this week)
Over the week he had a 1.0 GAA and a .962 save percentage.
After a slow start, Jakub Kindl has really played well of late. This week he had two goals, which gives him a career-high three on the season. His assists, hits and blocked shot numbers are also on pace to be his best ever.
Even with the offensive touch he added this week, he still maintained his defensive responsibilities as he finished plus-two for the week. That is even more impressive considering the down scoring week it was for the rest of the team.
While you always want to see Pavel Datsyuk score more, he is a magician at setting up his teammates. He only took five shots over the four games this week, but he did assist on three goals and played his usual stellar defense.
He opened the shootout against the Blue Jackets with a goal, but the rest of the team was not able to carry that momentum and the team lost. For the season, Datsyuk as eight goals and 17 assists.
The team will be on a three game road trip this week. They play Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver during their longest road trip so far this season. They have a combined 3-1 record against these teams this season.
