Prospect's Walk-Off HR Debut 😱

Sports World Stops With Nick Adenhart's Death

Seattle SportsnetApr 9, 2009

Los Angeles Angels’ pitching prospect Nick Adenhart was killed in a hit-and-run car crash early this morning in Fullerton, Ca.

Hours earlier, Adenhart was on the mound for the Angels in just his fourth big league start.

The 22-year-old had worked his way through the Angels’ farm system and was considered one of the team’s top prospects. His bright future was suddenly cut short by a reckless driver in a minivan, who sadly took the lives of two others, as well.

Adenhart’s final game was a display of his unmitigated talent. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings, scattering seven hits, while striking out five, and walking just three.

It is a tragedy when anyone leaves this world in such a fashion, but perhaps one that is more striking to us when it involves an individual whose name is known to many because of the public stage upon which he performs his daily work.

Though his death is no more or less devastating to those closest to Adenhart, those who otherwise may not know his name or appreciate his life are made aware by his celebrity as a Major League Baseball player.

Adenhart’s tragic passing brings to mind those of other baseball players in recent years: Mike Darr, Cory Lidle, Josh Hancock, and Darryl Kile, just to name a few.

Adenhart will be remembered around baseball stadiums nationwide throughout the day.
