Elimination Chamber 2013: Latest News and Rumors Surrounding WWE's Big PPV

1 of 12

The 2013 edition of WWE’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view is scheduled for Feb. 17 in the New Orleans Arena, and the hype surrounding the last major show before WrestleMania 29 is through the roof.

The WWE will be looking to set the stage for the final run toward the biggest show of the year, and that will result in one of the best Elimination Chamber shows in the company’s history.

Between a WWE Championship rematch, a World Heavyweight Championship match and an Elimination Chamber match to crown the No. 1 contender for the world title, this show is shaping up to be unforgettable.

Wrestling fans won’t want to miss a second of this action as the WWE continues the build to the biggest WrestleMania of all time.

Christian Cleared to Return?

2 of 12

According to F4WOnline (h/t Wrestling Inc.), former world champion Christian has been medically cleared to return to the ring.

While there is no questioning how much better the roster would be with the WWE staple back in the mix, there may not currently be room in major storylines for the veteran.

If Christian doesn’t make a surprise appearance at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view or on the Raw the following night, the WWE will likely wait until after WrestleMania 29 when a few of the top stars leave the company to bring the former champion back.

Christian's reported return will help ease the blow of losing guys like The Rock and Brock Lesnar likely until SummerSlam.

Early WrestleMania Talk

UPDATE: Saturday, Feb. 16, at 3:24 p.m. EST by Brian Mazique

Tons of WrestleMania 30 news has come out in the last two days. The Rock has been confirmed to work the event per Ringside News, as this current run is reportedly scheduled to end in April to allow The Rock to film Hercules.

In addition to that, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees apparently leaked the fact that WrestleMania 30 will be held at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La.

The word from the French Quarter is that @wwe is bringing @wrestlemania to our house in 2014! #NOLA @mbsuperdome #WM30

    Insert blackout jokes here.

    ---End of update---

Elimination Chamber is the final pay-per-view before WrestleMania. The speculation about potential matches for the marquee event of the year has already begun, with a triple-threat match between The Rock, John Cena and CM Punk being talked about a lot.

Marc Middleton of WrestlingInc.com passes along a report (via F4WOnline) that states WWE officials aren't even considering that match at this point.

It's always possible that WWE could put CM Punk into the John Cena vs. The Rock WWE Title match at WrestleMania 29 but nobody within WWE has seriously suggested that and word is that the best bet remains on the Cena-Rock II singles match taking place.

Although another feud between The Rock and Cena would be a good way to headline WrestleMania, adding Punk to the mix would be even better and make it more unpredictable. Alas, it doesn't sound like that's in the cards, at least not yet.

It would be a major surprise if The Rock drops the championship at Elimination Chamber. That means another feud would need to develop for Punk if he's not going to remain in the title picture. Things will begin to sort themselves out soon.

CM Punk Still Banged Up?

4 of 12

After undergoing knee surgery in December and suffering a scary bump at a live event last weekend, the damage is starting to mount for the former WWE champion. PWMania.com reports backstage officials are concerned about his health status.

There is definitely a concern with WWE that CM Punk is beat up and more hurt than he’s letting on. WWE officials will likely keep him protected as much as possible between now and WrestleMania 29.

Of course, Punk is still scheduled to face The Rock for the WWE title at Elimination Chamber in a rematch of their Royal Rumble encounter. The mounting injury concerns don't appear like they will impact his status for that match.

The company will definitely want him healthy for the biggest event of the year, however, so the idea of protecting him after Elimination Chamber shouldn't be a surprise. It's going to be interesting to see what's in store for him in terms of a storyline starting Monday night.

US Champion Antonio Cesaro vs. The Miz

5 of 12

Another match has been added to the 2013 Elimination Chamber card, as WWE.com announced that United States champion Antonio Cesaro would defend his title against The Miz at the event.

The Miz was brutally attacked by Cesaro again on Raw, and the duo’s longstanding feud will boil over into another title shot for the former WWE champion.

The Miz was defeated on the Royal Rumble YouTube Pre-Show by Cesaro last month, so there is a serious chance that title could change hands at Elimination Chamber. If Miz doesn’t win here, expect this feud to carry on to WrestleMania where he will capture the title.

Elimination Chamber YouTube Pre-Show

6 of 12

Despite breaking up just a few weeks ago, Team Rhodes Scholars will reunite for 2013 Elimination Chamber YouTube Pre-Show to square off against Tensai and Brodus Clay in a standard tag team match, according to WWE.com.

The event will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 17 on the WWE’s YouTube page.

It is clear that the WWE may have caught lightning in a bottle with Tensai becoming a fan favorite because of his dancing, but how the pre-show match goes against Rhodes Scholars will determine the dancing duo’s future.

Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow can afford to lose because they aren’t a tag team anymore, and a win over a legitimate tag team would make Brodus and Tensai legitimate contenders for the tag team titles.

Final Elimination Chamber Card (Post Raw)

7 of 12

WWE Champion The Rock vs. CM Punk (If Rock is counted out or disqualified, Punk wins the WWE Title).

John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus vs. The Shield.

World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Big Show.

Elimination Chamber Match to determine the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Divas Champion Kaitlyn vs. Tamina Snuka.

Not much changed to the Elimination Card after Raw, but the addition of a stipulation to the main event has changed the complexion of the match. The Rock retaining was almost a foregone conclusion before, but the new DQ stipulation will have fans wondering if a win for CM Punk is possible.

As great as the rest of this card looks, the best match on paper is the actual Elimination Chamber match featuring six of the bets stars in the WWE right now. With the No. 1 contendership on the line, this bout will be the most memorable of the night.

The added women’s match would mean something if that division was given a chance to flourish; good luck with that.

Latest on No. 1 Contender Elimination Chamber

Neither the WWE Championship nor the World Heavyweight Championship will be defended inside the Elimination Chamber at Sunday’s show.  However, the winner will be one step closer for a shot at the title.

UPDATE: Saturday, Feb. 16, at 3:31 p.m. EST by Brian Mazique

It appears that Jericholics can get used to seeing Y2J with the WWE in some capacity for the foreseeable future. Jericho told Scott Fishman of the Miami Herald he has no plans of taking a long hiatus any time soon.

Here is a quote from Jericho in the article:

“I have been feeling great,” Jericho said. “I feel like all the matches that I’ve been having are the best matches on the show or close to it. This is especially true the last couple of weeks working with guys like Daniel Bryan. I really like doing other things too.

“Fozzy has been doing great. We are getting ready to go to Australia and then I will come back to WWE after that. The Robot Combat League is a big opportunity. I’ve always considered myself an entertainer more than just a wrestler or just an actor or just a musician. I think it’s very beneficial to do all these other things, but still be able to come back to WWE for good chunks of time or spurts.

“That is probably going to be my career from now on. I will keep coming back as long as I feel I’m still working at the highest level that I can. It won’t be for two years, but if I come back to two or so months at a time. Then I can do that, then it gives me the opportunity to do the other projects I have going on as well.”

    ---End of update---

    The six spots are set.

On Monday night's broadcast, Jericho (over Daniel Bryan), Jack Swagger (over Zack Ryder) and Kane (over Dolph Ziggler) all earned victories to join Mark Henry, Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan in the crucial chamber match.

    ---End of update---

There have already been three names announced for the six-man match—Mark Henry, Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan—and the battle for the final three spots in the chamber will carry on into the final week before the show.

While most WWE fans would have liked to see the match set already and have the combatants all in the ring this week on Raw, the possibility that there could be a surprise entrant leaves the door open for fans to speculate.

Two likely entries are Kane and Jack Swagger, but with the way the WWE parades The Great Khali around, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in the match instead of one of the other two more talented wrestlers.

CM Punk Possibly Injured at House Show

9 of 12

According to ProWrestling.net, former WWE champion CM Punk was reportedly dropped on his head by The Miz at a local show over the weekend. The duo was performing a suplex, but Punk landed on his head and was attended to by trainers on the scene.

The report claims that Punk rolled to the outside of the ring to collect himself, but the feeling after the show was that the former WWE champion would be able to fight The Rock at Elimination Chamber.

Let’s hope this injury isn’t serious, not just for Punk’s sake, but for the sake of the build to WrestleMania 29 and the future of the business.

Why the Shield Versus Faces Won’t Be in the Chamber

10 of 12

Despite the hopes of many fans in the WWE Universe, the six-man tag team match between John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus vs. The Shield will not happen in the Elimination Chamber structure, according to F4WOnline (h/t Wrestling Inc.):

The reason why Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns vs. Sheamus, Ryback and John Cena at WWE Elimination Chamber won't be happening inside the Chamber is because it would be an elimination match and WWE doesn't want to have to eliminate five of their hottest Superstars right now.

The Shield has been amazing since their arrival in the WWE, leaving their mark on every major star in the company, but it’s time for something huge to happen in their storyline.

There is no bigger match for the trio than facing John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus.

If the WWE wants to continue this storyline through WrestleMania, the company must add a huge swerve at the Elimination Chamber to breathe new life into the trio.

Whether it’s aligning with Brock Lesnar, or CM Punk, or something totally different, The Shield must do something huge Sunday.

Brock Lesnar’s Gone Again?

11 of 12

After just returning to the WWE, Brock Lesnar is currently not scheduled for the go-home edition of Raw this Monday (2/11) or the following Monday (2/18), according to Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc.:

Brock Lesnar is not currently scheduled for this Monday's RAW from Nashville, TN, or the following week's episode from Lafayette, LA. He is advertised to appear on the February 25th episode from Dallas, Texas.

The WWE doesn’t want to give the fans the impression that Lesnar will be on the PPV if he won’t, so giving him two weeks to get away from the cameras surrounding the Elimination Chamber event is the smart plan.

If WWE is determined to increase viewership on Raw after the Elimination Chamber despite not having Lesnar, this is the best time to possibly bring The Undertaker back.

Either way, WWE TV needs more Lesnar.

Full Elimination Chamber Card (Pre-Raw)

12 of 12

WWE Champion The Rock vs. CM Punk.

John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus vs. The Shield.

World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Big Show.

Elimination Chamber Match to determine the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Despite the fact that this PPV is clearly a holdover until the official final stretch to WrestleMania 29 kicks off the following Monday, the WWE has used the show as a way to further the secondary storylines leading into the April supershow.

The right booking of this PPV could result in serious momentum heading into the final six weeks before WrestleMania, furthering the hype around the WWE’s biggest show.

While Monday’s Raw could change everything, the groundwork has been set for an epic show.
