Has Miguel Torres Been the Best Fighter in MMA This Whole Time?
I am not one for knee-jerk reactions. I normally like to let results sink in and put them in perspective, allowing the emotion and adrenaline to fade.
But as the fifth round of WEC 40's main event came to a close, one question was unavoidable: Is Miguel Torres the best fighter on the planet?
He certainly is the most entertaining fighter, as his fights have become must-watch events for even casual MMA fans. Additionally, his last three fights have all been epic battles.
His win over Yoshiro Maeda was widely considered the fight of 2008, and Torres finished 2008 with a dominating win over the then-undefeated Manny Tapia. And now he opened 2009 with a hyper-entertaining fight against Takeya Mizugaki.
Torres' record is a sparkling 36-1 and the man is a finisher, with only six of his victories coming from the judges' scorecards.
Torres has outstanding Jiu-Jitsu with 22 professional submission victories but this doesn't mean opponents want the fight to stay standing. Torres is an outstanding striker with power and speed.
Perhaps Torres greatest weapon is his mental strength, he is so confident in his well-rounded game that he challenges his opponents in their strongest aspect.
He stands with strikers and rolls with BJJ aces and doesn't change his gameplan in the face of adversity.
Torres tests himself against the best his weight-class can offer and the results have been amazing fights, and possibly one of the most dominant fighters in the world. It's hard to find a reason not to place Torres in that elite class with Anderson Silva, GSP, and Fedor.
Torres striking is on the level with Silva's, his submissions skills are the equal of Fedor's and he has the athleticism of GSP.
The one thing he lacks is that one punch KO power, but that is very hard to come by when you are 5'9" 135 lbs, and he links strikes together so well it almost doesn't matter.
In short, Torres is what B.J. Penn is hyped as and in all honesty should be, the most complete fighter in MMA.
He can knock you out, submit you, outlast you and break you mentally. Miguel Torres easily could be the best fighter in MMA, and there is doubt he belongs in the discussion.
