Chicago Cubs Rounding Out Their Best Decade Since the '80s

andy mungerApr 5, 2009

These are the best times Chicago Cub fans are witnessing in the teams history. They have won more titles and been in more post season games this decade than any decade since the '30s.

They are predicted again to dominate the weak  National League Central and they have had all this success in this decade despite having Dusty Baker manage for a number of years.

I never thought I would see the Cubs dominate this division with perennial winners like the St Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros. These teams always seemed to beat up the Chicago Cubs and go to the playoffs in the '90s.

In the '70s the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates were strong franchises that produced and kept their star players. The Chicago Cubs teams of the seventies would never dominate and  treat them like they have in this decade.

I don't know what it is about the current Chicago Cubs organization that has been able to sustain a winning operation, but I think all of it is that lack of competition within the division of this decade. Now the Cubs just need to top off and end off this decade with a championship just like they did the last time they played in the first decade of the century.

Though the Cubs have been more successful in the '00 decade, my favorite decade will always be the '80s. You had Marla Collins running around in hot shorts retrieving baseballs. Harry Carey came as the announcer and was singing all the time and talking about Budweiser.

The Chicago Cubs won two division titles and had some fun players in the era before steroids forever tarnished the game. This was also the decade fans stated to fill the ballpark and Wrigley Field came into its own.

Prior to that there was no legacy or appreciation for Wrigley Field as a special place. The only thing left to see at Wrigley is a world Championship which may come this decade or the next...or maybe the one after that.
