Bobby Abreu: The No. 1 Fantasy Sleeper Pick

Brandon KatzApr 5, 2009

Now it’s only my first year doing fantasy baseball, but three weeks in, and I’m already hooked. In fact, I see a lot of parallels between fantasy baseball, and ABC’s Lost.

Both are excruciatingly frustrating (I can’t seem to be able to trade Jermaine Dye no matter how hard I try!!), while still incredibly addicting and exciting.

I am still learning how to piece together a dominant team, and so far I’m doing a pretty solid job. But the one concrete thing I’ve realized is that you can’t win without at least one sleeper pick on your team. That’s why I’m here, to tell you my No. 1 overall sleeper pick.

Bobby Abreu

Yeah that’s right, Bobby Abreu. An under the radar type of player that some people seem to look over in the draft. At the bottom half of the ninth round, I saw him and knew he was my secret weapon. This guy gives you all around solid stats in every major hitting category.

Last year, he batted .296, with 20 HR, 100 RBI, 100 R, and 22 SB (a stat that is bound to go up now that he is on the more run oriented Angels). Yet still, Abreu remains only 82 percent started in the Yahoo fantasy league. What more can you ask of a fantasy player?

He’s a five-category guy, which is more than can be said for top picks Albert Pujols (only seven SB in 2008) and Jose Reyes (only 16 HR in 2008).

So if you’re in a last minute draft any time soon, and the rounds are getting late, and you’re looking for a perfect compliment to your team…look Abreu’s way.

You know exactly what you’re going to get from Abreu night in and night out. Along with the well-rounded stats, Abreu has played in at least 150 games every year since 1998.

I’ll let you guys know how my fantasy endeavor ends up. But win or lose, I know I’m going to get some great games and pure consistency from my man Bobby.

Abreu is my No. 1 sleeper pick.
