Sports Fan's Paradise: Why April Is The Best Month of the Year

Tracy HeckApr 4, 2009

There are many times during the year that a number of sporting events take place at the same time, but no month is busier than the month of April.

In the span of 30 days, each major sporting league is represented. From the start of a season, to quarterfinals and championships, there is a little something for everyone.

Obviously, the top standout event in April is the NCAA basketball Final Four. After the insanity that is March Madness, the Final Four is the best of the best and is always guaranteed to be a good show.

This year, the games are in Detroit where Michigan State University has the hometown advantage going into the championship game.

The Final Four is not the only basketball in April. The month also plays host to the start of the NBA playoffs.

This year's tight race in the West should be interesting to watch and everyone is looking forward to seeing LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers take on Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers.

If someone else manages to knock one of these teams out of the Finals, you'll want to be there to watch.

The NHL playoffs also begin in April.

The Stanley Cup stands above and beyond any other trophy in the sporting world and the 16 teams in the race for the championship always play their hearts out.

Can the defending champion Detroit Red Wings hang on for another shot?

For those that pay attention to world sports, they can catch more playoff action over in Europe where the Champions League soccer quarterfinals are taking place. The raw emotion and electricity of the soccer world are unmatched.

While the NBA and NHL are winding down their seasons, the MLB is just beginning theirs.

Baseball has always been America's favorite past-time and nothing says Spring like Opening Day.

Last April, golf favorite Tiger Woods won his fourth Masters tournament right before a injury sidelined him for the rest of the year.

After making his return a few weeks ago all eyes are focused on next weekend's Masters.

Will Woods be able to gain a fifth green jacket?

April also plays host to the popular NASCAR Talladega race and the wrestling world's event of the year: Wrestlemania.

Finally, the month allows for a look forward into the future as the NFL Draft takes place.

Football fans around the world are always glued to their televisions trying to find out who their team will pick and whether or not their favorite college players will get their shot at greatness.
