Maybe It's Time To Change the MMA Scoring System

Jessy MorrisApr 2, 2009

Every MMA organization uses the same pointing system that boxing does, if ever one of their fights goes to the judges. Now MMA and boxing have been compared for many years now, and everybody agrees that both sports are very different.

Then why do they use the same scoring system?

Boxing is a sport that never goes to the ground; you can only use your fists and there are 10 rounds.

In MMA, most fights go to the ground, kicks are legal, knees are legal, elbows are legal, and there are three rounds.

Different, right? So I don't understand why they use the same scoring system. How many times have we seen MMA fights go to the judges and then the judges get it all wrong and then it becomes a controversial ending.

Forrest Griffin against Rampage Jackson, Don Hyun Kim against Karo Parisyan and after watching Ultimate Fight Night 18 yesterday, I have to add Carlos Condit against Martin Kampmann.

There are many other fights that ended with most people scratching their heads, those are the most recent I thought of. I'm not taking anything away from Martin Kampmann here, I think he fought one hell of a fight, I think both guys had a great fight, but I also think that Carlos Condit won the two first rounds.

Pushing the pace of the fight, octagon control, landing strikes on your opponent and takedowns are all things that will win you points in a round. What about stopping a takedown, submission attempts and fighting off your back?

I sometimes think that the judges don't pay attention to those things. MMA is so diverse that using this point system will often cause controversy.

They should probably pay more attention at what the two fighters do right, and give them points according to that, do this for every round and the fighter with the most points at the end wins, I don't know.

I really think that MMA needs to change their scoring system soon.

I would really like to hear if any of you would have a solution for this.
