It's Official: Denver Broncos Will Trade Disgruntled, Emotional Jay Cutler

Rich KurtzmanMar 31, 2009

"We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded," Broncos' owner Pat Bowlen said in a public statement late Tuesday night.

Bowlen also stated that neither he nor head coach Josh McDaniels have been able to contact Cutler for the past 10 days, and after talking to Cutler's agent Bus Cook on Tuesday, Bowlen was convinced "that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos," according to ESPN's John Clayton.

This is truly a somber day for the Denver Broncos' organization, one in which a pro bowl quarterback must be traded because his feelings were hurt.

I'm sorry, does Cutler think this is sixth-grade gym class?

This is the NFL, which stands for "Not For Long," as in no team is willing to deal with a player who's ego is out of control and creates distractions every day, for long.

Coming into the 2009 season, every position seemed up in the air on defense, while the offensive side of the ball seemed basically set besides a running back, and Brandon Marshall's coming suspension.

Cutler is a good quarterback that is on the verge of greatness, something he was close to in 2008, reaching his first all star game. He has a rocket for an arm, is somewhat mobile, is intelligent, and can lead on the football field.

Those are his good qualities.

Cutler's faults, however, are just as numerous. He is cocky and much too emotional on the football field.

Cutler has been seen on the field throwing passes into double and triple coverage, only to have the ball picked off. Sure, sometimes the laser-passes will get through, but his confidence in his ability hurts whatever team he plays for.

After having a bad series, Cutler has also yelled at coaches, and fellow players, and his head automatically sinks displaying a nonverbals that shout "mentally broken!"

Cutler's youth and ego create a distraction state around the team. His youth leads to mistakes that cost his team, and his ego was hurt when his name was even mentioned in trade talks, because he thought he was too good to be traded. Now he wants to be traded, and it looks like Jay will get his way after all.

Even through all those faults, Cutler's physical ability outweighs the bad, and he could be one of the top-five quarterbacks in the NFL, one day. That is, unless he is traded to a perennially basement team like Detroit, or Cleveland.

Which brings me to my next point, the Broncos better get a king's ransom for the young cry-baby QB.

First choice, the Detroit Lions. Denver should trade Cutler for Detroit's number one overall pick, and a later pick, like their second rounder (33). Then the Broncos should turn around and draft Matthew Stafford with the first overall selection.

The whole deal would be upsetting because Cutler was taken in the first round (11th overall) and was groomed into the good quarterback he is today. Denver would have to do it all over again, and hope Stafford is the real deal.

Second choice, the Cleveland Browns. The Broncos could trade Cutler for Brady Quinn, or Derek Anderson, in a package deal with a stout defender, like Shaun Rogers.

While neither Quinn or Anderson are the quarterbacks that Cutler is, both at least have NFL experience already under their belts. Hey, McDaniels wanted a mediocre quarterback to teach, as he traded for Matt Cassel, maybe he will get what he wanted after all.

Third choice, the Dallas Cowboys. Denver should trade Cutler straight up for Tony Romo, and move past this situation all together. Romo is young, has a great arm, and cannot handle the spot light that comes with playing in Dallas. I know, Jerry Jones said recently that they are going to build around Romo, but it's nice to dream sometimes.

Whatever the Broncos do, it will make the team better from the standpoint that there will be less distractions, and McDaniels can finally take complete control of the football part of the organization.

Also, it would be beneficial to get Cutler out of the AFC and away from playing Denver every year. Hopefully something happens sooner rather than later, so McD and his new QB can jell.

Whoever the next quarterback, if McDaniels sours another relationship, this debacle will be placed squarely on his shoulders. If Cutler goes on to being a mediocre quarterback, he will look like the bad one coming out of this saga.

Here's to the Broncos officially entering a rebuilding stage, as the playoffs seem to drift further and further away.
