New School I: Rocky "Azucar" Romero

Jabot SingleterryCorrespondent IMarch 29, 2009

There are so many talented wrestlers on the Indy circuit or over in Japan that don't get the recognition they deserve. I think it's time for these future stars of the business to get some exposure.

I'm just starting to know more about Rocky "Azucar" Romero myself, but from what I've seen from his matches on YouTube, he looks to have a promising career in either WWE or TNA.

Getting into the business/Japan

The Cuban-American wrestler broke out on the scene on Sept. 13, 1997. He received training in California at the New Japan Dojo by legendary Japanese wrestler, Antonio Inoki.

While working in New Japan Pro Wrestling he was chosen as the fourth incarnation of Black Tiger. As the villainous Black Tiger IV he feuded with Tiger Mask IV, he'd win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship on Oct. 8, 2005. Romero would no longer portray Black Tiger IV, but the legacy continued on with Black Tiger V.

Grey Shadow/Mexico

Romero began to compete in CMLL, the world's oldest wrestling promotion(founded in 1933). He became the first ever World Super Lightweight Champion on Sept. 8, 2003 by defeating Volador, Jr. in the final of a tournament. Rocky would don a mask once more in early 2008, this time competing as the Grey Shadow.

In October 2008, he jumped ship to AAA while still holding the CMLL World Super Lightweight Champion. Romero was introduced as a member of Sean Waltman's Degeneration Mex in Puebla, Mexico.

Ring of Honor

Romero gained more exposure in the United States as one half of the Havana Pitbulls with Ricky Reyes.

Reyes and Romero set a record in ROH by becoming the longest reigning ROH Tag Team Champions, until that record was broken by Austin Aries and Roderick Strong. Reyes and Romero were also members of Homicide's stable, The Rottweilers.

Return of the Tiger

For one more time, Romero competed as Black Tiger IV in Chikara against Mike Quakenbush for the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship.

Return to ROH

Rocky returned in January 2007, by defeating Davey Richards. Soon, Rocky Romero would walk out on his long time partner Ricky Reyes during a match against the Briscoes Brothers. He became a member of the No Remorse Corps, with new teammate, Davey Richards. As of now, Romero still works on the Indy Circuit and over in Japans NOAH promotion.

Romero is known for his stiff shoot-style kicks and numerous variations of armlocks. Also known to be very technical wrestler.
