The Lone Villanova Championship, 25 Years Later

Steve ChottMar 28, 2009

Almost 25 years ago, college basketball saw one of the greatest upsets of all time. The Villanova Wildcats stormed through the NCAA Tournament as an eight seed and ended up winning the whole tournament.

They started their amazing journey against Dayton, defeating them 51-49. Next came a bigger win against the No. 1 seed in their bracket, Michigan, 59-55. They pulled off a huge upset, but no one thought they would make it farther than the Sweet 16.

In the Sweet 16, they continued to surprise people by beating Maryland 46-43. They would meet Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith and North Carolina in the Elite Eight. The game turned out to be their biggest win to date by beating them 56-44.

The Final Four would bring them against Memphis State. And once again, they would win 52-45. Villanova was very close to pulling off the greatest upset college basketball had ever seen.

In the championship, rival Georgetown were 10-point favorites. They were coached by John Thompson and led by Patrick Ewing. Georgetown were also defending champions.

Then, they pulled it off in the championship game, with blistering shooting from the field, making 78 percent of their shots. They won 66-64, going down as the only eight seed to win the tournament.

Villanova was coached by Rollie Massimino and led by the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Ed Pickney. This win has gone down as one of the greatest tournament wins in college basketball history.

Now, almost 25 years later, Jay Wright is leading the 2009 Villanova Wildcats on another trip through the tournament, now as a No. 3 seed. It won't be as much of an upset, but it would be nice as a fan to see another tournament win to go with the one in 1985.

And this team could definitely win the tournament. Today, their road takes them to the Elite Eight against Pittsburgh.

They have a very talented team that seems to have all the skills that it takes to win a championship.

The 1985 championship isn't the only time they have been to the game, but it is their only win. Rollie Massimino has been spotted at the Villanova games; maybe he is a good luck charm.

It doesn't matter to me though, if we need luck to win I'll take it. Anything to see Villanva win a championship.
