Cain Velasquez Delivers the Performance of a Lifetime in Defeating Dos Santos

Anthony FuscoJun 2, 2018

What an amazing fight to end off 2012. For a full five rounds, Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez went to war with the UFC heavyweight belt on the line.

Velasquez used his high level wrestling and controlled this fight from the beginning. In the first round Velasquez was all over dos Santos.

He clipped him with a shot and swarmed him with punches to the head. Velasquez took him down and ended the fight dominating the now former champion.

The rest of the rounds went much the same.

Velasquez looked like a man on a mission tonight, as he kept the pressure on dos Santos from the opening bell of each round. It was a complete dominating performance by the new champion, as he out-worked and out-pressured dos Santos over the course of their bout.

Velasquez was able to walk through Junior's best shots, and keep on going. He put on the best performance of his career this evening for a number of reasons. He was able to work his wrestling and secure takedowns. From there, he was able posture up and rain shots on dos Santos.

He took the best dos Santos could throw at him and kept on trucking. He was able to impose his game-plan and it worked perfectly. Velasquez won a workmanlike fight this evening. He displayed great cardio and wrestling, which ultimately won him the belt back.

Velasquez had the best performance of his MMA and UFC career. He set out to impose his will and bruise and batter the champion, and ultimately, take back the belt.

He did all that and more to once again become the UFC heavyweight champion. He also handed dos Santos his first career UFC loss.

Velasquez was motivated, hungry and ready to take back the belt. He had an amazing performance and was rewarded with the UFC heavyweight title to close out 2012.
