The Secret Life Of a Pro-Wrestler, Who Knew I'd Be There To Find Out Personally?

Joe Burgett Mar 24, 2009

You see those people in the picture? None of them are me but I was once one of them. Ah yes, those days were wonderful. When you could sit in the stands and just watch the action only wishing to one day be a part of it in some small way.

Well that actually came true, sort of a Cinderella story really. While I did not lose a shoe, cell phone, iPod, or whatever to have a prince charming one day find me, mainly cause I am a dude. I did get a chance to masquerade as a pro-wrestler.

At least as a developmental one of course. See I live in Alabama, which where I live is about six hours (depending on traffic of course) from Florida and FCW-Florida Championship Wrestling.

FCW is a developmental league for the WWE. Similar to what NFL Europe was for the NFL. In which we saw Super Bowl winners Adam Vinatieri and Kurt Warner come out of to name a few.

FCW actually gave us some great wrestlers. People like CM Punk, Ted Dibiase, Cody Rhodes, Tyson Kidd, Jack Swagger, Evan Bourne, Kofi Kingston, and other new stars in the WWE today.

I was set to follow these men, no pressure right?

It all started with my attendance at the FCW event I went to. They saw me in the crowd and like many do in the WWE, they messed with the crowd a bit.

They saw me in the front before the show, and asked me if I was willing to take a slap to the face to help sell a heel promo for a wrestler. I accepted.

No most of you may be wondering, do they actually do that? Well of course, also it is developmental.

But as the show started I had no idea what would happen other than the slap. It started and I saw matches with many of the FCW guys and gals. Then it came, my moment, my one shining moment on the developmental stage.

I will not tell you the wrestlers name, as I don't want you to remember him as the guy who had to ask a dude to ask another dude in the audience to take a slap.

But of course the moment finally came, he came out and did a great promo. Then it came, he went up to me and then slapped me across the face.

Did it hurt, heck yes. The dude had a huge hand, of which I did not expect when I first saw him.

After the show he came up to me, and said thank you. Then asked me if I was ever interested in wrestling.

I had interest, but never really pursued it. I did have TV experience, and acting experience. But never much wrestling. Other than what me and my friends did on the trampoline of course.

He said that he saw the intensity in my eyes when I got slapped. He saw how I acted completely surprised, even though I knew the slap was coming all along. He saw the prospect of something.

What it was, I had no idea. But he saw something he told me. He said for me to come back tomorrow and meet John Laurinitus. And HR and developmental guy for the WWE.

I had the ultimate opportunity.

Do I accept the offer or not? Well there was a clear answer.

But how would I do once I accepted?
