Sergio Garcia is on the verge of exposing a major flaw in the world golf ranking system. The point system used to figure out just who the No. 1 player in golf is at any time, is more difficult to understand than the Federal bailout plan.
I mean how in the hell could Sergio Garcia possibly be considered the top ranked player in golf. I mean what are they using for criteria? How vile can you be towards fans? How accurate can you be when you spit into the hole after making bogey? Maybe they look at how many Sunday leads you can choke away in a Major Championship or how many James Bond type Beer commercials you can crank out.
I digress, what I really wanted to do was make a point regarding the accomplishments of our current No. 1 golfer to Garcia. Now, this may seem a bit biased as I am a huge Tiger fan but C'mon!! Is there really any doubt AT ALL who the best golfer on the planet is? What's the first name that comes to your mind, Sergio? I don't think so.
Eldrick Woods has 14 Majors and counting—Sergio.....gooseegg! Tiger has won over 60 tour events. Sergio has won twice on tour since 2005—Tiger during that same stretch, 25 times!! 25 times!! 25 Times!! I'm not a professional golfer but I have an idea of how hard it is to compete under that pressure and actually win on tour—I mean I choke on three footers with $5 on the line, but Tiger does it with ridiculous regularity and we want to consider Sergio as Numero Uno!!!
My point is this....you absolutely, positively, without a doubt, cannot consider anyone the best golfer in the world without winning a Major Title. How can you say you went up against the best players in the world 20 something times so far and have never beaten them and consider yourself No. 1.
Just before the WGC a couple weeks back they asked Serg about the possibility of being No. 1, he said "it would be great to do that during the Tiger Era." Are you kidding me? The only reason you were as close as you were was because Tiger was kickin it on his yacht and making babies for the last 8 months!!
I've vented long enough and it's funny how these articles take on a tone of their own, even when it was not necessarily the one intended. But we all get angry about something, in fact I remember a time not so long ago at Doral when I snapped a driver over my knee after a duck hook into the lake. Hmmm, maybe I'll submit my name to the World Golf Rankings and see if I come out above Phil—anything's possible!!
