Arsenal are believed to be lining up a bid of around £6 million for Dutch international Klaas-Jun Huntelaar to try to entice a move over the winter transfer window.
The Gunners boss is starting to feel the pressure in the Premier League following another loss on the weekend—making it his side's worst start under Wenger—and he knows that the involvement of another attacking threat could be what they need to regain their clinical edge this season.
According to The Daily Mirror, Wenger feels that Schalke striker Huntelaar would be the perfect man to bring in, with a £6 million bid likely to be made once the window opens.
Arsene Wenger is ready to make a £6 million bid to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in January.
The Arsenal boss has had Schalke’s Dutch striker watched extensively in the last few weeks, and the reports coming back have been very positive.
Wenger’s scouting network believe the Gunners, who have lots of cash to spend, should go for the 29-year-old—who has scored home and away for the Germans against Arsenal in the Champions League this season. The club are lined up to make their move as soon the winter window opens.
Huntelaar has just six months left on his contract at the German club—meaning any transfer he would make now could come at a reduced price for the Gunners.
However, having said that, the striker did just fire his side into the Round of 16 in the Champions League and would perhaps be unlikely to leave their Champions League campaign at this point of the season—making a summer transfer window a more likely alternative for the 29-year-old.
Wenger has already hinted at the possible return of New York Red Bulls striker and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on a loan spell (per The Daily Mirror), but the North London club know that a stopgap measure like Henry doesn't help them in the long term at all.
With Gervinho about to leave on international duties for the African Cup of Nations, Arsenal's strike force could certainly use some new faces and additions, with Huntelaar a seemingly good prospect provided they can entice the Dutchman to leave Schalke.
Newcastle United striker Demba Ba was touted as another potential target for Wenger (per The Sun), but with he too away on international duties, it seems unlikely that the Gunners boss would try to activate the £7-8 million buyout clause in his contract over the winter window—that move seems more likely to occur over the summer.
A move in the summer could also come for Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente, who has confirmed he will leave at the season's end (per The Telegraph).
But for now, with the winter transfer window approaching, it seems like Huntelaar is the Gunners' best chance to try to nab a strong striker capable of lifting their finishing, and hopefully picking up a few more points for the North London club.
Should Arsenal make a move for Huntelaar over the transfer window?
