Why Being Dreamer Means You Can't Always Be a Sports Fan!

Joe Burgett Mar 19, 2009

Looking at the picture above you may be wondering, what?

Well it kind of makes sense for the article. This picture came out around the same time Mike Shula got fired as Alabama coach. And when now current Alabama Coach Nick Saban was being pursued for the Alabama coaching job.

But Forrest Gump being a fixture in Alabama sports history (even though fictional) was still a big contender for the coaching job, at least for the dreamer.

Fans of sports teams are biased. You cannot deny it either. These are the people who pick their team to go all the way in their Brackets during March Madness.

I had a friend who picked his team, a 12 seed, to beat Duke, North Carolina,Ā and others to go all the way and win the National Championship.

Anyone who knows this team, which I will remain nameless, knows they have no chance of going all the way. Yet since he is a fan, he picks them. He is a dreamer, yet still a fan.

There are some fans that actually know sports. And possibly could pick their team to beat a few others, but know they can not make it all the way. And they won't pick them to either.

Which is ok for them to do, they are just fans of a team. People who follow one school and one school only, are incredibly biased. They do not know what else is out there because all they do is watch their team.

Sure they see the teams their team faces, but still would pick them against any team at any time. The dreamer in them wants to see the upset, even though they do not consider it an upset.

In this March Madness Tournament, we will see upsets. Most our brackets will be busted, and our team will be out. Will you stop watching once your team is eliminated?

Or will you watch the games, especially the Championship game? You knew that your team was going to be there, you flat out knew it. Yet they were eliminated in the second round.

The dreamer in you wanted to see it, but you didn't. The problem some have is they get angry if their team is gone. They boycott the whole tournament then.

Why? This is the most exciting basketball you will see all year, even more than NBA games. Sure you could put the six OTs game up there in consideration. But the tourny starts today.

Once it is up and going you will be excited when you watch. I say quit the dreaming for one second and become just a sports fan.

Are you a sports fan if you quit watching once your team is out? Really can you be?

I say no personally, because they doesn't make you a fan in my eyes.

A fan is a person who will watch The New York Yankees when they live in Florida. A fan is a person who will watch USC play when they live in Alabama.

You don't have to be a fan of a particular school or team to be considered a sports fan. Because in my eyes you can't be. Sure if you're into one sport, and not into others, that is cool.

But when you sayĀ your aĀ fan, yet you only watch one team or schoolĀ and no one else, how can you be?

It isn't like you don't have a chance to, they are on all the time.

Well, maybe its just me.
