Eve has retained the Divas Championship at Survivor Series by defeating Kaitlyn, one of the division's rising stars. It's the third straight month with a pay-per-view victory for Eve.
While her title reign has been nothing special, it really isn't her fault. The division continues to get very little air time on the weekly shows, making it nearly impossible to have a memorable run as champion.
Back when Raw first moved to a three-hour format, it was believed the mid-card titles—including the Divas Championship—would be the biggest beneficiaries of the added time. Fans thought there would be more time given to those storylines.
It hasn't happened. The main-event feuds continue to get the majority of the attention—probably more than necessary—leaving other champions like Eve to pick up the scraps. It's difficult to build up any type of momentum under those circumstances.
The division has also suffered two major losses over the past year in Kharma and Beth Phoenix. Those two superstars were expected to improve the Divas' standing with some memorable battles, but they never came to fruition.
Who knows where the division would be right now if Kharma and Phoenix would have been able to feud, but it's safe to assume it would have been in a much better spot than it is right now.
Again, Eve hasn't been the problem. She's a reliable worker that has excelled in other storylines over the past year, but her booking since becoming champion has given her little chance to shine.
Kaitlyn is a Diva on the rise and has a good chance to help elevate the division moving forward. Even though she lost at Survivor Series, her standing has improved markedly over the last few months and has been impressive in her expanded role.
She isn't on the level of Kharma or Phoenix quite yet, but she has plenty of upside once she gains more experience. It probably won't be long before she gets her first run as champion.
Nobody expects the Divas to get nearly as much attention as the battle for the WWE or World Heavyweight titles, but it would be nice to see something other than a seemingly random assortment of five-minute matches all the time.
Whether it's Kaitlyn, Eve or another Diva, hopefully someone is given an opportunity to lead the division to a higher level in the near future. It doesn't seem likely, however.
Let's see what happens now that Eve has defended her title at one of the year's biggest show. Unfortunately, it will probably be more of the same.
