Why Doesn't WWE Films Make Movies About Kayfabed Storylines
One of World Wrestling Entertainment's subsidiaries is WWE Studios, a motion pictures company based in Los Angeles. It has produced and co-produced several movies including The Scorpion King, See No Evil, and The Marine alongside many others.
While it is quite obvious that the purpose of this subsidiary is to turn WWE into a media conglomerate, not to mention to serve as another money-making venture for the McMahon family, WWE Studios also solidifies the role of wrestlers not only as athletes and entertainers, but as actors and actresses as well.
Personally, I find some of these films top-notched while some have been disappointments. Regardless, it is always refreshing to see one's favorite wrestler away from the ring and performing on an entirely different stage (the big screen).

With those said, I can't help but wonder whether WWE has plans to cement and elaborate on wrestlers' characters and storylines on the big screen. This may sound absurd at first, but let's take a look at some of the things already going for WWE:
Materials
WWE will have no problem what so ever with this given the personas wrestlers already have. Think of Kane and the Undertaker. One doesn't have to look any further that these two as they play larger-than-life characters.
Also, WWE Books, another subsidiary, tried to novelize the kayfabed history of Kane. So, why not in film?
Acting
Wrestlers put on a great show week in and week out. And I don't just mean physically. Fans have seen great promos from Y2J, HBK, Orton, and Edge just to name a few.
Even though ECW and Smackdown are taped, keep in mind that these wrestlers are acting in front of a live crowd with little or no room for mistake.
Of course, promos are botched every now and then. But in film, it will never become a problem as scenes can be re-shot and edited.
Money
There is no need to elaborate on this one as WWE has already been making films. I understand this will cost more (especially if you consider the special effects needed for Kane and Undertaker for example), but the fact is WWE has more than enough resource.
At this point, let this blogger run his fancy for a moment. The first moment I thought about this, I keep thinking about what Hollywood and Marvel are planning to do with The Avengers.
They're releasing background stories for each character. They've shown Spider Man. They rebooted The Hulk. They've released The Iron Man. They're planning to release a Thor movie. All of these are culminating for a mega movie The Avengers two or three years down the road.
Imagine WWE doing this with each and every essential character culminating in a mega movie involving all of them.
Also, even though these films would work best live, I also see some benefits if they are animated. Animation can bring back older characters back therefore further expanding the storyline. Also, an animated film will not put a burden on the weekly wrestling shows.
That's about it. I think making films about the kayfabed histories and lives of wrestlers would be a lot of fun to watch. Surreal, yes, but I'm pretty sure all wrestling fans would be curious to see them. Last but not the least, I know storylines are forever changing but here's a few of the characters I want to see in the above mentioned films:
- Undertaker: Death
- Kane: The Devil
- Mankind: demented (think Malkav of Vampire the Masquerade)
- HHH: an egocentric businessman with a hidden persona (think Batman/Bruce Wayne)
- HBK: A war torn, scarred warrior
- Stone Cold: A drunkard Assassin
- Cena: well, a marine
- Edge: A rock star/vampire
- Y2J: Again, I don't know why but I see him as a computer hacker. Maybe because of his video entrance
What do you think? Every comment is greatly appreciated.
