Memo to Phillies Fans: Watch the WBC and Understand What K-Rod Can Do

Mike KentSenior Writer IMarch 17, 2009

This is a response to a article written by Christian Karcole. It is probably not as good, but I did my best. I hope there is no love lost between the writers here on B/R because of this article but I felt I needed to write it.

Yes, the Phillies bullpen was great in 2008. Let's say J.C. Romero was there for the Phillies, we all know that J.J. Putz is better than him. If he was there for the Phillies we would almost have a race.

He is not, so Phillies' fans are going to tell me that Brad Lidge is better than both Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz? Not in your dreams.

I think both Mets' and Phillies' fans know that the Mets have a better bullpen than the Phillies, even though the Phillies are saying to themselves that it is the other way around, to make them feel better. It is hard to deal with the truth.

All the stats Christian Karcole showed in his article were from last year's Mets-Phillies games. We all know the Mets got a lot better and the Phillies lost J.C.

Do you watch the WBC? If not, it is time to start.

The Mets have been amazing in this tournament. They are showing the world how good they really are.

Lots of Mets have played great in the WBC, but there are three players that have stood out, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and Francisco Rodriguez.

We can talk about how Beltran and Delgado are helping to lead Puerto Rico another time, but K-Rod deserves his respect for what he is doing for Venezuela now.

He has been amazing for Venezuela in the tournament, in the last two games he has recorded saves.  Overall, he has thrown 4.2 innings and he has seven strikeouts with three saves and has not giving up a run while only walking one. His fastball is going over 92 MPH, he stats are great.

Thanks to a lot of help from him, team Venezuela is going to L.A. for the finals, they are the first team to clinch one of the four semifinal spots in L.A.

Not that the numbers don't say great things about him, but the people that have watched him pitch know that there is more about him than his stats show.

When you see him pitch you get the feeling of safety, knowing that he is going to do his job well.

That is a feeling that I have not felt since the very start of 2008, when Wagner closed nine games in a row with out giving up a hit.

Now the feeling is back, I can't wait to see K-Rod pitch for the Mets in Queens.

I trust him, I have never said that about anybody in the Mets' bullpen. I also think that if we did not have K-Rod, then J.J Putz would be the best player in the Mets bullpen, since John Franco. That is how amazing this bullpen has become!

P.S.: I am not going to be around for the next week, so I will respond to all comments when I come back.
