Arsenal are believed to be interested in signing Queens Park Rangers midfielder Adel Taarabt over the upcoming winter transfer window, in order to add some new attacking creativity to their midfield for the remainder of the 2012/13 season.
Taarabt is thought to be a backup plan should the Gunners not be able to land their top transfer target—Wilfried Zaha—due to the price tag that Crystal Palace have placed on the youngster amid interest from other Premier League giants.
Adel Taarabt is the shock name on Arsenal's transfer list for January.
Arsenal will bid £7 million for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and the England under-21 winger is their top priority. But they have checked out Taarabt, 23, who has a reputation as a skilful but frustrating wide player since his move to QPR from Arsenal’s local rivals Tottenham.
It is likely that Arsenal are looking at the Moroccan in case Zaha cannot be lured away from South London.
Taarabt is no doubt a talented player in the Premier League who would be an interesting addition to the Gunners' side, but is it a deal that we're likely to see take place?
Well firstly, in terms of Wilfried Zaha, it does seem like a likely outcome—that is, Arsenal are unlikely to land Zaha and will need to look to other alternatives.
The talented winger is already in London and would therefore make a switch to the Premier League and Arsenal quite easily, but I just can't see Arsenal offering enough money to tempt the Championship club into selling the 19-year-old.
And even if they somehow do make the £20 million, I can't see Palace selling.
So in terms of needing another option to Zaha then, yes, any deal for Taarabt is more likely to take place over the January transfer window.
But in terms of Taarabt himself and what he would bring to the Gunners, I can't see it happening. There's simply no way Arsenal will sign him.
The North London club do not need another winger.
That's especially true once you consider all his personal issues, which have resulted in him drawing heavy criticisms for his lack of discipline and professionalism.
I mean, seriously. The guy vowed never to play for his country again after being left out of the team once, and perhaps more famously, caught the bus home for Queens Park Rangers while the game was still going after being subbed off in a loss to Fulham last season (per the Daily Mirror).
There is simply no way that Taarabt fits into the professionalism and organization that Arsene Wenger currently has working at the Emirates Stadium.
There is simply no way that Taarabt is a better option out wide than the likes of Aaron Ramsey or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Arsenal this season.
He might be more likely to come to Arsenal over the winter transfer window than Wilfried Zaha, but that doesn't mean that a deal is going to be made.
I just can't see this one working for the Gunners at all.
Will Arsenal make a move for Adel Taarabt over the transfer window?
