Facebook Users Find a Unique Way to Pay Tribute to Hillsborough Disaster

Jamie WardMar 16, 2009

Ask any Liverpool supporter what they are doing on 15th April, and they will probably tell you they are paying their respects to the 96 lives lost in Sheffield in 1989.

The 20th anniversary of England's deadliest football disaster will witness millions of football supporters across the planet coming together with one voice and saying "You will never walk alone."

On Wednesday at 3:06pm, everywhere from the Mersey to the Loxley, the Big Apple to Big Ben, the Wild West to the Far East, and everywhere in between, every Liverpool supporter will find a moment to themselves to pass on their love.

Some will attend memorial services in Liverpool and Sheffield, some will watch the ceremony on the official LFC.TV channel. Others will gather in pubs and raise a glass, whilst many will send their regards in the way of cards and letters.

One group of Liverpool supporters have found their own unique way of marking the day.

Several members of a Facebook application called Liverpool Kop have decide they will get together and create a worldwide representation of support in the shape of a flag.

However, this is not just any old flag. This one is being constructed with 2x2cm squares of red material that contain tributes and special messages to everyone involved in and effected by the tragedy.

These small pieces of material offered as support are not only being sent in from all over the country; but also from places like Australia, South Africa, Thailand, China, Mauritus, and America to name but a few.

Each person that sends in their little piece of the flag will have their name, where they are from and their personal message put in to a special book that will be presented, along with the flag, to the families of the victims on 15th April 2009.

Over the last two months, little pieces of red cloth have been flooding in from here there and everywhere and slowly but surely the idea created by those Facebook Liverpool supporters is starting to take shape.

But there is still plenty of space for more tributes to be added to the flag which can take up to 1200 pieces of material in total.

If you would like to contribute your little piece of history to the memorial flag then get in contact and find out more

It is a very simply process of buying a small piece of red material, probably about 20p in any material shop near you, signing your name and a short message and posting it off to the address that will be provided to you.

A small price to pay to be part of such a big tribute on a very special day.
