Arsenal have endured a horror start to the 2012-13 English Premier League season—their worst under manager Arsene Wenger—and are rightly looking for some much needed relief in the upcoming January transfer window, both in terms of players coming and leaving the North London club.

According to latest reports, Lyon midfielder Yoaan Gorcuff is being considered as a possible winter transfer target for the Gunners and manager Arsene Wenger.

Per The Metro:

Wenger had previously said signing Gourcuff "is always tempting for a coach" and now it seems his club Lyon are ready to let him go.

The French team are currently experiencing financial problems and their president Jean-Michel Aulas revealed last month that they may have to let some of their star players leave [as a result].

"We're planning on selling two or three players for a total of €30 million," Aulas said. "If he [Gorcuff] returns to the highest level and he wants to go, then there could be a transfer [over the winter transfer window]..."

The Gunners are believed to have been tracking the French international for the past two seasons, and has been greatly impressed with that what he has seen.

The fact that he's French, well, that's most likely just an added bonus for Arsene Wenger and for Gourcuff, who clearly fits the bill for the type of player that the Gunners both need and are interested in picking up.

But perhaps most importantly for any transfer activity, the 26-year-old does not really have a starting place in Lyon's side at the moment, and is seemingly available for purchase if the right offer does indeed come in for him.

Having suffered an injury setback already this season, Gourcuff is having to earn his way back into the French starting side—as he most likely would have to do also if he came to the Emirates, where he would join a technically strong and sound Gunners midfield.

The  Gunners already have the likes of Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Abou Diaby, Lukas Podolski, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, heck, even Gervinho in their midfield this season, and the addition of Gourcuff would no doubt add another strong edge to their squad.

Whether it's exactly what they need this transfer window? Well, that's still up for debate, and will likely split fans regarding any possible move.

Whilst the North Londoners are lacking that clinical edge in their attack this year, one look at their squad (or even the names listed before) will show that they already have a whole host of players to choose from and work with.

The depth of talent already existent in this side is plentiful, but that won't stop Wenger from adding to it—if he deems it necessary to compete this season.

The veteran manager has already shown this year that he can find a shrewd deal when there is one available from a financially-troubled club—as seen with Santi Cazorla—and could well do the same with Gourcuff if the option presents itself once more.

But €11 million for what would probably just become a bench player?

Just doesn't seem like the move that Arsene Wenger makes at the moment.

Even if he is French.
