Georgia Bulldogs fans won’t even have to change the channel after the Ole Miss game on Saturday to stay tuned for another game that could have major implications for the Dawgs.
It’s almost certain that the winner of the Alabama/LSU game will represent the West in the SEC Championship Game, so the Bulldog Nation should have an interest in the outcome Saturday night.
Before going further, let me state that by no means am I completely comfortable assuming UGA will be there to meet either of these teams in Atlanta. Obviously, the Dawgs must stay focused and win their next two SEC games against Ole Miss and Auburn.
That being said, those are games Georgia should win. And if they do, the question becomes, who would the Dawg Nation rather see in the championship game? Let’s break it down, shall we?
At first glance, LSU seems to be the obvious choice.
The Tigers have already lost a game to a team the Bulldogs beat, so there’s plenty of reason to believe Georgia could beat LSU.
LSU has a great defense, but Georgia does too and the LSU offense is certainly suspect.
Nobody wants to play the juggernaut that is Alabama.
I mean clearly, Georgia stands a better chance against LSU, so fans should want to see the Tigers upset the Tide, right? Wrong.
I’m not just a Georgia Bulldogs columnist; I’m also a fan. And as a fan, I say: I…WANT…BAMA!
While this might be a bit like Little Mac calling out Mike Tyson, I don’t care. This falls under the category of “if you want to be considered the best, you have to beat the best,” and Bama certainly appears to be the best today.
Now, if Zach Mettenberger and the LSU offense somehow turn a major corner and flat-out beat the Tide, fine, bring on the Tigers. However, if Alabama suffers a close upset in a game it should have won—which is a real possibility considering it’s a night game in Death Valley—I’ll be supremely disappointed.
While the Tide have looked like world beaters this season, they're not invincible. No team in college football is immune to a loss on any given Saturday.
If the Dawgs can build off the early season success of the offense and the defensive performance last week against Florida, they will be a very dangerous squad. In fact, clicking on all cylinders, I’ll go as far as to say that Georgia has the best chance of anyone in the nation to knock off the Tide.
So, I say to all those in the Dawg Nation, keep your sets tuned to CBS after the Georgia game and start your chants of “Roll Tide!” Let Alabama roll all the way to Atlanta so the Bulldogs have a shot to stem the Tide, shock the nation and pack their bags for Miami.
