WWE Hell in a Cell 2012: Reviewed Match by Match, Tweet by Tweet

0 of 9

    WWE Hell in a Cell 2012 has come and gone. It was one of the most anticipated pay-per-views in recent history, keeping everyone guessing until the very end.

    Some of the matches delivered, some of them were flops. And there were several conclusions that no one saw coming.

    I live-tweeted during the event, so let's revisit those tweets and analyze those matches.

Randy Orton vs. Alberto Del Rio

1 of 9

    @otheaudacityTheir feud may be meaningless, but @RandyOrton vs. ADR was a sick match.

    I'm a big fan of both of these guys, but I really had low expectations for this match. The feud was haphazardly thrown together, both men just needing someone else at their level to compete with.

    But it paid off. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any ADR match that I enjoyed more than this one. Orton has a long history of solid matches, but nothing in recent history stands out to me like his match with ADR last night.

    Considering these guys had almost nothing on the line except their own heat, they totally killed it.

Team Hell No vs. Team Rhodes Scholars (WWE Tag Team Championship Match)

2 of 9

    @otheaudacity: #TeamHellNo vs. #TeamRhodesScholars was an okay match, but should have been on Raw with a real payoff at #HIAC

    I'm sure a lot of other people have already said this, but the ending of the Tag Team title match was something worthy of Raw, not a pay-per-view. This is exactly the kind of ending that should set up a pay-per-view match, not an ending to the pay-per-view match.

    The match wasn't bad, but you just can't end a pay-per-view title match like that. Hopefully, the rematch is at Survivor Series, and there is some sort of hardcore stipulation. I would suggest a tables or ladder match, but the December pay-per-view is TLC.

    Maybe there should be another questionable ending at Survivor Series between Team Hell No and Team Rhodes Scholars, then see how they match up to teams like Edge & Christian, the Dudleyz or the Hardy Boyz in terms of TLC matches.

Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz (WWE Intercontinental Championship Match)

3 of 9

    @otheaudacity: How much does @WWE Corporate love @mikethemiz ?? Building a solid PPV promo around a sponsor's commercial. #Awesome #KofiKingstonOverrated

    Before we talk about the match, can we talk for a minute about the promo that The Miz gave right before the match? I hate, hate, HATE sitting through an actual commercial during a pay-per-view, but this one actually added something to the promo that followed.

    Was that the plan from the very beginning? Did The Miz just ad lib that promo after hearing the commercial? Did someone write that promo for The Miz knowing about the commercial ahead of time?

    Either way, The Miz took an irrelevant commercial, promoted the show it was a commercial for and made the whole thing into a badass promo about his upcoming match. The Miz knows how to make the boss happy.

    @otheaudacity: @mikethemiz should have attacked and injured Kofi post-match.

    After the Intercontinental Championship match, I really started to hate the championship rematch clause. The Miz jobbed to Kofi three straight matches! I admit, the matches were mostly solid, including this one. But what good does that do for The Miz to lose to a midcarder (upper-midcard at his very best) three times in the course of two weeks?

    And does Kofi come out looking any stronger? Not really.

    The only way The Miz would avoid looking weak with this loss would have been for him to attack Kofi Kingston after the match, causing an "injury." Keep Kofi on TV but out of action, have the title stripped, let The Miz recapture the title and save Kofi's rematch for TLC so it can be a ladder match.

Antonio Cesaro vs. Justin Gabriel (WWE United States Championship Match)

4 of 9

    @otheaudacity: @AntonioCesaro with a solid win over @Justin__Gabriel #USChamp #FutureMainEventer @wwe #HIAC

    The conclusion to this match was absolutely no surprise at all. But the match was still entertaining. Both Cesaro and Gabriel are excellent workers, and this match was no exception.

    Antonio is at the very beginning of a stint in WWE that will eventually see him climb to the top. He will have a US Championship reign unlike anything we've seen recently in WWE.

    Now, if we could just get Kassius Ohno and Seth Rollins up on Raw or SmackDown...

Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara vs. The Primetime Players

5 of 9

    @otheaudacity: Glad to see PTP vs. Rey/Cara on PPV. Hope @WWE doesn't rush the @ReyMysterio @TheSinCaraWWE feud, let them build as a team for a while #HIAC

    I thought it was a really good move to put these two teams on the PPV. It used to be quite the norm for two contending tag teams to have a nontitle match on a PPV. It's a sign that the tag division really is improving (in case you didn't already think so), and it gives something for guys like Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara to do on a pay-per-view.

    It's very conceivable that both of these teams will hold tag team gold between now and WrestleMania. I think the Primetime Players will be around for a while as a team, and they could eventually be at the same level as teams like the APA and the Road Warriors were.

    Everyone says that WWE is building to a Rey/Cara match at WrestleMania. While I think it's too soon (and I think that it should happen at a pay-per-view held in Mexico City), if they go through with it, I hope they build Rey and Cara for at least a few months, so it feels like something important is happening when they split.

    @otheaudacity: @TheSinCaraWWE neck injury, work or legit?

    At first, I really couldn't tell what was going on. They showed that replay a few times, and I still wasn't sure if it was a legitimate injury or not. Based on the fact that it was never mentioned again and he walked away on his own accord, I think it's safe to assume it was legit (and not very serious).

    Anyone else think it was a work at first?

Sheamus vs. The Big Show (World Heavyweight Championship Match)

6 of 9

    @otheaudacity: @WWESheamus vs. @WWETheBigShow for the WHC would be more interesting if the cell mysteriously lowered during the match. @wwe #HIAC

    If I'm being completely honest, I didn't even watch the first half of this match. One of my computers was freaking out, and I was bored enough with this match that I worked on my computer for a few minutes.

    Why would you name a pay-per-view Hell in a Cell if you're only going to have one match that lasts less than thirty minutes inside the Cell? At the very least, put both World titles in the cell.

    My roommate thinks they should just leave the cell down the entire pay-per-view. They wouldn't have to utilize it in every match, but it would be very ominous.

    The end was really, really well done. I didn't expect a clean win for TBS. Glad that I started watching towards the end.

    @otheaudacity: Where's DOLPH?!?!?

    I really, really wanted Dolph Ziggler to cash in on The Big Show right after he won the title, giving Show two separate title reigns that lasted less than a minute. I have a very long, drawn-out version of that scenario that really works for The Big Show.

    I hope Ziggler saves the briefcase until WrestleMania.

    @otheaudacity: Glad to see @WWETheBigShow get the WHC. Match was booked perrfectly, except for no #MITB

    Not much else to say. The end of the match (and the end of the reign of Sheamus) was done beautifully. Without the cell, I completely expected that this match would tank. Glad I was absolutely wrong.

    It seems like a lot of people assumed this would be in a cell. Is that what you thought? Do you think it should have been?

Zack Ryder Dressed as a Witch (aka Eve Torres)

7 of 9

    @ZackRyder: I was on the PPV... #witch [Retweeted by Dustin Murrell]

    Admit it, you thought it was mildly entertaining. We got a joke and an appearance from Ron Simmons.

Eve Torres vs. Layla vs. Kaitlyn (WWE Divas Championship Match)

8 of 9

    @otheaudacity: Triple threat for #WWEDivasChampionship w/o @TheBethPhoenix or @NatbyNature ?? #NotWorthMyTime @WWE #HIAC #BoredWithSupermodelWrestlers

    You can argue with me until you're blue in the face, but you're not going to convince me that WWE's Divas division is worth a damn. I mean, for starters, it's called the Divas division. How good could it be?

    We all thought Kharma would be the savior of WWE's women's division. Didn't happen.

    When Beth Phoenix was on a roll as the Divas Champion, it brought some respect back to the division. Then she started jobbing to people like Layla and Eve. Ridiculous. No wonder she's leaving.

    We had Gail Kim for a while. Then she realized how terrible the division was and she left.

    When Natalya started to get some TV time, I thought they may push her to lead the other women. Instead, they wrote an angle in which she constantly had perpetual flatulence.

    So now we're left with women like Layla and Eve.

    Remember when the women's division had solid performers like Lita, Trish Stratus, Molly Holly and Chyna?

    Okay, I'm done with that rant for now.

    @otheaudacity: @EveMarieTorres retains @WWE #DivasChampionship ?? Lesser of three evils.

    If we're forced to pick between the three participants in the triple threat match, I have to go with Eve. I think Kaitlyn could develop quite nicely if she has the right mentors. Someone like Beth Phoenix, for example. I can't imagine ever being a fan of Layla, at least as a wrestler. I enjoyed her more when she was a backup dancer for Kelly Kelly on ECW.

CM Punk vs. Ryback (WWE Championship Match Inside Hell in a Cell)

9 of 9

    @otheaudacity: @WWE Title match had the right conclusion but the wrong execution. Lazy booking WWE Creative. #EasyWayOut #HIAC

    For the second time on one pay-per-view, WWE gave us an ending to a title match that really belonged on Raw, building to an actual conclusion at a pay-per-view. WWE managed to hype this pay-per-view really well, but it had one of the worst conclusions of any pay-per-view since the time WCW's pay-per-view stream stopped halfway through the main event!

    A "rogue" referee? No appearance by John Cena or Brock Lesnar? No major bumps?

    What Foley said to Punk was true: This was an opportunity to cement his legacy, to go down as a legend instead of a statistic. Punk could have put on a fantastic show and then go on to be the first person to beat Ryback cleanly. They could have somehow involved Cena so that he could take the fall. Punk could have weaseled his way out of the match, only to be violently destroyed after the match.

    Instead, we get a cheap ending with a cheap post-match quarrel. Shell Shocked on top of the cell? That probably hurts less than being Shell Shocked in the ring!

    The WWE could have done so much with this match, and they completely blew it.

    @otheaudacity: @JoeyStyles @Ryback22 @CMPunk @HeymanHustle @WWE That was a weak ending. Punk's legacy was not furthered, needed a clean win or a sick bump.

    @otheaudacity: @JoeyStyles @Ryback22 @CMPunk @HeymanHustle @WWE There was no #OhMyGod moments in that match. Not even Top 10 #HIAC matches of all time,

    These last two tweets were in response to a tweet sent out by Joey Styles. I realize that it is part of his job to promote the WWE product, but his comments regarding the last match of the pay-per-view were just a bit much for me.

    @JoeyStyles: That image of @Ryback22's foot on a fallen @CMPunk's on top of #hellinacell will live forever and haunt @HeymanHustle. @WWE

    No, Joey. No, it will not. It will live on for a few weeks, as we are constantly reminded of how the main event of Survivor Series came to be. When this feud is over, that match will go down as one of the least exciting Hell in a Cell matches of all time.

    A terrible way to end a brilliant pay-per-view.
