WWE Hell in a Cell 2012: Eve Defeats Kaitlyn and Layla to Retain Divas Title

Dathen BoccabellaOct 28, 2012

It’s not often that a Divas match is preceded by a video package to recap the division’s developments over the last month; however, that’s exactly how things started for the Divas segment at Hell in a Cell.

The defending champion Eve faced off against both Layla and Kaitlyn in a triple threat match, with the animosity between the three spanning back over recent months. It all started at the infamous botched battle royal where Kaitlyn secured a shot at the Divas title instead of Eve, as was intended.

Last month at Night of Champions, Eve took out Kaitlyn and stole her place in the title match against Layla, where Eve picked up the victory and the championship. The following weeks saw a series of matches and skirmishes which led to tonight’s triple threat title match.

The bout started off with Layla and Kaitlyn working together against Eve, but their partnership soon disintegrated over who would go for the cover. Eve would use this to her advantage with the tactic of taking out Layla to focus on the ankle injury of the more inexperienced Kaitlyn.

The triple threat match made for an unpredictable and fresh environment that the division has long been lacking. With plenty of near-falls, the match was one of the best the division has seen recently.

The standout of the three was by far Kaitlyn, who no longer looked like a green rookie. With an arsenal of suplexes, submission holds and power moves, Kaitlyn is looking capable of filling the void left by Beth Phoenix’s recent retirement. At times, Kaitlyn’s power was even reminiscent of what we’ve come to see from John Cena.

In the end, Eve would retain the title after hitting a top-turnbuckle diving senton on both Layla and Kaitlyn. Akin to the tag division with its two matches, the Divas had a strong showing tonight at Hell in a Cell.

Let us hope this momentum can continue.
