The game was over. We had just witnessed an all time, heart stopping win by Syracuse in a game against an arch nemesis. It was retribution for that Cleveland State miracle-heave. It was...
Like they have been recently, a Big East Championship between the Syracuse Orange and University of Connecticut Huskies was bound for another great finish.
And the rest is history. We all just witnessed an epically historic basketball game, one that won't soon be repeated anytime soon. Six overtimes...Players fouling out left and right...Buzzer beaters, clutch shots. This game had it all.
Credit to all of the players who took part in this game on both sides. A lot of guys stepped up huge in spotlight moments and in the end the Syracuse Orange gutted it out and wrenched away a victory.
Jonny Flynn played an absolute lights out game and was perfect all night from the free throw line, most of those shots coming in pressure situations. He would not let Syracuse loose and once Thatbeet was out, the lane was his for the rest of the night.
Andy Rautins nailing clutch after clutch shot. He has become such an important part of this team it's almost unbelievable.
And Arinze Onuaku hitting TWO FREE THROWS IN A ROW. I mean seriously, when I said this game had it all I wasn't kidding.
Tremendous crdedit has to be given to Justin Thomas, the senior walk-on for The Orange who had to come in when Devenforf fouled out. He had an absolutely HUGE rebound amongst the big guys and had a great defensive play towards the end of the sixth overtime when Syracuse began to take over.
A lot is going to be said and written about this game, but I believe, even with such a limited perspective, this was one of the best basketball games ever played at any level.
So remember where you were when you watched it because we've all just been a part of sports history.
And Syracuse fans, what do you think, does this top Gerry's run in '06?
