Manchester United vs Chelsea
Manchester United currently has five wins and two losses. Chelsea has six wins and one draw. The two teams have faced each other in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
According to a title in The Independent, the rivalry between the two teams is immortal. In order to address what Manchester United can do in its upcoming match against Chelsea, a roundtable discussion was formed.
The panelists include Max Towle, Dan Talintyre, and Jerry Koh. An invitation is sent to B/R readers to sit back, relax and discuss how Manchester United can defeat Chelsea.
It might not receive the attention that it should, but United’s ability to shut down Chelsea’s defenders in attack will be a huge factor in determining the winner of this one.
We know how good the likes of Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Oscar are, and United’s defense will have a tough enough time restricting their involvement in the match. They also shouldn’t have to worry about the likes of Ashley Cole and Branislas Ivanovic contributing in from the back.
Both are brilliant attacking defenders in their own right, so Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa must do what they can to stunt their flow out of defense and chip in from the back.
It might not seem like much, but remember that it was Cole who scored the late winner against Stoke and Ivanovic who scored late goals against Norwich and Reading.
Mata and the merry men will do their best to cause havoc throughout attack; United will need to shut down the Chelsea defenders before that havoc spreads any further.
United must pack the midfield to prevent Juan Mata from having the creative freedom to roam the park, like he usually does.
The threat that Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic pose must not be underestimated, but Chelsea are a team that prefer to attack through the middle rather than from out wide, so Michael Carrick (and possibly Darren Fletcher) has to play the role of spoiler just in front of defence.
It would be nice to have an attacking forward threaten the shaky David Luiz, but I’d rather leave Nani out of the equation at the moment.
In general, it might seem pessimistic, but I think United stand their best chance of winning by dropping deep behind Mata, Hazard and co. and playing on the counter attack. Javier Hernandez might be a good bet in this case.
Chelsea vs Manchester United
Come on, United—let’s not be scared of Chelsea! This is a club which has beaten the likes of Barca, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in its history before!
I hope we can use Rooney and RVP (Robin van Persie) up front, as they would be lethal together, and hopefully we have Valencia back so that we have dynamism on the wings!
I suggest we perhaps rest our key players for this clash. Yes, Braga is an important game, and we don’t want the Champions League disaster of 2011 happening again.
This could potentially be a title decider. And as for containing Mata, Hazard and Torres, as long as Buttner is playing and everyone keeps full attention throughout the game, we should be fine. As long as we play at our best, we should be able to sneak out with a victory.
Javier Hernandez must be added to the roster in the match against Chelsea. Hernandez proved himself for Manchester United with his two goals against Braga in the Group H UEFA Champions League.
The midfield should be reinforced since Juan Mata tends to be dangerous in matches he participates in. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie can be used as well in this vital match.
Manchester United does the right thing in not underestimating opponents (like most teams do). I am expecting this match to be as exciting and close as previous encounters between the two teams.
Note: As this slideshow is being published, The Telegraph reports that Shinji Kagawa will be out for one month. The reason is a knee injury.
My thanks to Jerry Koh, Max Towle and Dan Talintyre for their participation in the roundtable discussion. It is also an honor and a privilege to present the Manchester United vs. Chelsea slideshow for the B/R public.
Enjoy the weekend until next time.
