Arsenal is already preparing for the seemingly eminent departure of midfielder Theo Walcott by scouting Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha. The 19-year-old Zaha has been lighting up the scoreboard and raising the asking price for his services at the same time. He could provide some instant offense, but at what price?
Arsenal would be foolish to spend an exorbitant amount of money on Wilfried Zaha. He's not worth it.
Many other teams are in the hunt for Zaha and the price may continue to rise with every game he plays. Arsenal has already made a stand against paying too much for Walcott, so it doesn't make sense for them to overspend on Zaha.
According to ESPN, Walcott claims he can't make up his mind based on "footballing reasons," but some people are speculating that he just wants more money.
The midfielder depth for Arsenal is adequate if they lose Walcott, with guys like Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey. Forwards Gervinho and Santi Cazorla have also played well together, producing many scoring opportunities.
The price tag for Zaha, who is rated in the £12 million bracket, seems to be too steep for what Arsenal actually needs. They have played well and will be mortgaging their future if they shell out too much money for Zaha. I do think that Zaha is worth it, however, Arsenal should not be considering that deal right now. They could find more creative ways to improve the team.
Arsenal already has a great player in Theo Walcott and would be better off investing in his future with the club. Walcott can do a lot of things as a midfielder. Zaha could strengthen the forward position, but something like an injury would put Arsenal in a bad place in the future. They should pay Walcott and let someone else overpay for Zaha.
