Can Portsmouth Stay Up?

Glen JonesContributor IMarch 7, 2009

Pompey are teetering on the edge, just one point above the drop zone. Relegation for Portsmouth would be catastrophic.  Mounting debts, an owner who wants to sell, and sub-standard facilities.

To go down now would no doubt be the start of a very rocky road. So what are the Blues' chances?

Well, Pompey are one point and one place outside the bottom three, and the other teams at the bottom are doing what struggling teams do at this time of year: They are fighting for their lives and have started to pick up results.

So, on initial examination, it may not look good, and let us remember that Pompey have slid a long way to that position.

However, on the plus side, Paul Hart and Brian Kidd seem to "have" the dressing room, with a succession of players publicly stating that he's the man for the job. Pompey have looked a lot more impressive since his appointment, especially defensively.

Personally, my worry is at the other end, and whether we can score the goals to stay up.

So let's look at Pompey's remaining fixtures, and I'll put my head on the block and make some predictions, and see how many points I think we will achieve:

Middlesbrough (a)  DRAW—Pompey go to (29pts)

First up comes a MASSIVE game in deciding Pompey's fate, and a nasty one to predict as you don't really know which Boro will turn up.

Everton (h)  DRAW—30pts

The Toffees are strong, and I can see a keenly fought 1-1 draw.

Hull (a)  DEFEAT—30pts

Not a big defeat, and probably another ropey decision thrown in. Pompey slip into the bottom three.

WBA (h)  WIN—33pts
A convincing 2-0 win at Fratton lifts spirits and the Blues out of the drop zone.

Bolton (h)  WIN—36pts

A second win on the bounce and Pompey have a little breathing space.

Man Utd (a)  DEFEAT—36pts

I don't think we can expect too much from this one; maybe have a few quid on Ronaldo for the first goal!

Newcastle (a)  DRAW—37pts

Pompey pinch a draw with a late goal to keep the Magpies involved in the battle.

Arsenal (h)  DEFEAT—37pts

Arsenal are not having a good year, but have enough on this occasion.

Blackburn (a)  DEFEAT—37pts

I can just see us losing this one, and would probably bet on Santa Cruz netting.

Sunderland (h)  WIN—40pts

I'd bet on Pompey getting this one, just because they need it more.

Wigan (a)  DRAW—41pts

Hopefully we are safe at this point, but if we need a result, Wigan could be a good place to do it.

So I have Pompey getting 41 points, hopefully.  I'm sure I will have some result wrong, but I think this gives a good idea what we need to do.  I have us staying up due to wins against West Bromwich Albion, Bolton, and Sunderland, but there are other winnable games in there too.

My guess at the teams to go would be WBA, Boro, and Stoke, but there are a lot of games to unfold yet.

I welcome any views on the results I've predicted.
