Relax, Falcons Fans! They Know What They're Doing

David Mar 7, 2009

We might not all admit it, but every one of us out there has some doubt right now. Free agency has begun with all the big names gone and the Atlanta Falcons have been conspicuously quiet.

But this isn't the only thing that worries you; the Falcons have also watched Brooking, Milloy, Foxworth, and Boley walk right out the front door and find work elsewhere.

But before we all get nervous and panicked, we have to remember that these aren't the same guys running the Falcons throughout the years of disappointment and misery.

Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith, and the rest of the personnel involved all know something that we don't. This might not sound nice, but there is nothing we can do about the Falcons' decisions.

Dimitroff has a system adopted from that of New England's, which is to build through the draft and mid-level free agency.

So for all the fans out there getting anxious over the situation, calm down. You can start to worry when the Falcons actually start losing.

To the same fans, did you expect the Falcons to go 11-5 after they gutted their entire roster and staff after the soon forgotten 2007 season? No, just like everyone else outside Flowery Branch.

"Outside Flowery Branch." You have to believe that Smith and Dimitroff had some expectations to where this team could go. They took players who fit their system, not the other way around.

TD did break the bank on Turner, but only because he knew it would be a vital piece to build a team around and help Matt Ryan develop by taking some pressure off of him.

But then we also drafted Harry Douglas, Curtis Lofton, Sam Baker, Kroy Biermann, and, of course, Matt Ryan.

Every one of these players helped the Atlanta Falcons develop into the team that reached the playoffs.

This is Year Two of rebuilding mode, focused on the defense this time. If Year Two is as good as Year One and has a good offense to balance itself, we as Falcons fans should be looking far beyond the Wild-Card round.
