If you missed the news, Brigham Young University has announced it will be using “blackout” uniforms from Nike for its Oct. 13 matchup against the visiting No. 14 Oregon State Beavers.

The normally conservative BYU has taken a huge step into modern times with this move, but it could be the ideal marketing gimmick for a smaller school looking to grow.

Young players love unique and interesting uniforms, and this could be the difference in swaying a recruit that is considering BYU in the future.

What student-athlete doesn’t want to be part of a blackout?

"Wow" Factor: 9 out of 10

When you looked at the original BYU white or blue uniforms, they were very plain with nothing spectacular of note. They were a perfect complement to he straight-laced attitude of the university—not anymore.

With the players adorned in black and the crowd asked to do the same, the idea of Brigham Young’s LaVell Edwards Stadium filled with a blackout is something most college football fans never thought they’d see.

If the Cougars' idea was to wow us, they did their job.

The first piece that has to be analyzed after any college football uniform change is the helmet. BYU is known for the giant “Y” on the side, and this blackout alternate keeps that tradition alive.

With a gray base to the helmet, the team inverted the classic blue/white color scheme of the “Y” for a new twist to their classic look.

Add in the black uniforms with white numbers and blue accents, and you have one of the most successful blackout uniforms in years.

While BYU may not be the first to have the black alternate uniforms, its subtle changes have made this one of the coolest in the sport.

Overall Swag Grade: 9.5 out of 10

BYU has never been regarded as the flashiest of teams, but adding a black alternate jersey is proof that the university is listening to new ideas and moving forward with the times.

The Cougars are part of several huge college football battles, and this uniform only adds intrigue to their program. While the effect may only be temporary, the publicity for the school is good.

While this will still not get me to buy any BYU gear, I wouldn’t mind being gifted a Cougars jersey.
