My father wrote on a site that he and I work on, The Met Wiki. (Special thanks to Wendy Adair who helps a lot on the Wiki.)
He wrote on the David Wright page this scary thought.
"Whenever I hear people talking about the Mets' can't miss young stars (Wright and Reyes) I cringe as I flash back to how much I loved Gooden and Strawberry. But I still hope to one day see Wright and Reyes in Cooperstown, with their Mets hats and World Series rings."
This is a very scary thought that is hard for a longtime Met fan to forget. Not that I am a longtime Met fan.
The history of the young guys in the Mets system is not looking good for David and Jose.
But I can see five reasons why David Wright is not going to be like Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden, so all my fellow Mets fans can sleep well at night.
1. David Wright Is the Team Captain
Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden both came to a team where they were not the leaders. They had Keith Hernandez as the team leader.
I think the team leader would be more careful about things like this and would try to be a good role model for the rest of the team.
2. David Wright Is Smart
David Wright was a straight "A" student in school and would not be stupid enough to blow the great career in front of him.
And yes, I am saying Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden are stupid.
3. This Is Not the '80s
In the '80s, everybody was taking some drug. Now in 2009, fewer people get close to that mess.
4. David Wright Has Learned from Others' Mistakes
Wright grew up a Mets fan, so he has seen how players like Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden blew their careers. He will learn from others' mistakes and not make them himself.
5. David Wright Loves the Game Like No Other
I know what you are thinking—cheesy.
I have never seen a guy enjoy playing baseball like David Wright does. He lives for this game and for the fans.
Wright is an amazing guy that you just cannot hate. He says the right things at the right time and does the right things at the right times. He is a amazing player, and loves playing baseball
Just the perfect person.
Good luck to David and the rest of the team.
