What does it take to be a good manager in professional baseball?
Many of us buy tickets to the games or sit in front of our television each night and analyze each and every decision made by our favorite ball club.
But can we truly understand all of the eccentricities that go into each decision, as well as the immense amount of anxiety and stress these players and managers face on a daily basis?
This is why it is so crucial that contending baseball teams have experienced managers who know how to handle themselves and their teams in stressful situations, much like the Tigers find themselves in right now.
With the regular season winding down and fall right around the corner, the Detroit Tigers find themselves in the middle of a heated race for the division championship.
As it stands, the Tigers are three games back in the division with merely 14 games left to play.
It is an incredible understatement to say that the Tigers find themselves in a hole and have a short amount of time to dig themselves out.
Because of this, Detroit will need to rely on the experience of many of the key veteran players; while it may come as a surprise and with a varying level of disagreement, Jim Leyland may be the most valuable veteran the Tigers have at this point.
Leyland has faced this kind of situation many times in his career and also has a tremendous amount of success against the White Sox for the last seven years.
During his time in the Motor City, he has led the Tigers to only two regular-season finishes below the White Sox, and those were during the 2008 and 2010 seasons.
It has also been said that players who play under Leyland love him as a manager. It was recently reported by the Detroit Free Press that Leyland's star player, Miguel Cabrera, ripped a sign that read "Fire Leyland" out of the hands of a fan while playing the White Sox at U.S. Cellular field.
While it is absolutely no secret that Detroit fans have had mixed emotions towards Jim Leyland's lineups, among other things, one cannot doubt the fact that he is using his vast knowledge of the game to give the Tigers the most competitive edge night in and night out.
Therefore, even though many diehard Detroit fans may disagree, Jim Leyland is a valuable asset for this Tigers team and will likely be the reason that they pulls themselves back to the top of the AL Central.
