Welcome to my second annual NHL Trade Deadline Live Update Blog.  Join me throughout the day as I break all the trades as they happen.  Here is how the updates will work:

  • Newest deals and updates appear at the top of the page
  • Trades will be in bold
  • My analysis will be in italics

Update 4:32--Well, that's it for me.  There still may be moves coming through the NHL registry, but I think this blog has done a great job of getting you through your work day.  Thanks for joining me.  Hope you can next year.

Update 4:25
To Edmonton: Ales Kotalik
To Buffalo: 2nd round pick

Update 4:16--Toronto grabs Kolzig, Heward
To Toronto: Olaf Kolzig, Jamie Heward, Andy Rogers, 4th round pick
To Tampa Bay: Richard Petiot

Update 4:07--Brian Burke announces at his press conference the Leafs have a minor deal still in the NHL registry yet to go through.

Update 3:55--Three way deal
To Edmonton: Patrick O'Sullivan, 2nd rounder
To Los Angeles: Justin Williams
To Carolina: Erik Cole, 2nd round from LA, 5th rounder from LA

Bit of a confusing two-tiered deal, but that's the basis of it.

Update 3:44--Sharks add some grit
To San Jose: Travis Moen, Ken Huskins
To Anaheim: Nick Bonninno, Tim Pielmeier, conditional pick

Update  3:38
TO Philadelphia: Kyle McLaren
TO San Jose: 6th round pick

To Chicago: Sammi Pahlsson
To Anaheim: James Wisniewski, prospect

Update 3:35-- Minor Trade
To Columbus: Kevin Lalande
To Calgary: 4th round pick

Update 3:29--Tampa, Florida trade
To Tampa: Noah Welch, 3rd round pick
To Florida: Steve Eminger

Update 3:27--TSN reports there is a lineup at NHL offices, with a log jam for trades coming through.  There is still expected to be more trades announced.

Update 3:18--The Toronto Maple Leafs also announce they are done dealing.

Update 3:16--Both Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators are reportedly done for the day.

To Anaheim: Erik Christenson
To Atlanta: Eric O'Dell

Update 3:08-- Moore To Buffalo
To Buffalo: Dominic Moore
To Toronto: 2nd round pick (originally belonged to Carolina)

Update 3:06--Leafs announce Gerber will not be traded, will start tomorrow against Washington.

Update 3:05--TSN is reporting Dominic Moore has been traded, though they are not sure of team, nor return.

Update 3:01--Remember that trades usually trickle down past the 3 PM deadline, so stay with us.

Update 3:00--Rangers Grab Morris
To Rangers: Derek Morris
To Phoenix: Dmitri Kalinen, Nigel Dawes, Petr Prucha

Update 2:59--The Florida Panthers have decided not tot trade Jay Bouwmeester.

Update 2:50--TSN reports the Leafs are trying to trade recently picked up Martin Gerber.

Update 2:47 Antropov Goes To Broadway
To New York: Nik Antropov
To Toronto: 2nd round pick, conditional draft pick

Update 2:44-
To Philadelphia: Daniel Carcillo
To Phoenix: Scottie Upshall, 2nd round pick

Update 2:41-- TSN reports that the Maple Leafs have received offers of second round picks for both Dominic Moore and Nik Antropov.  However, they say the Leafs are holding out for more.

Update 2:25--AM640 in Toronto is reporting that Chris Kelly and Chris Neil may be on the move to Florida, though this is not confirmed by any major networks.

Update 2:08--TSN is reporting that San Jose and Detroit could have a bidding war for the services of Senators winger Chris Neil.

Update--Bill Guerin A Penguin
To Pittsburgh: Bill Guerin
To New York Islanders: Conditional Draft Pick
A pretty solid deal for Pittsburgh here.  Really a fifth-round pick is a small price to pay for some grit and some secondary scoring.  Having said that, I am sure the Penguins have intentions of winning a playoff series.

Update 1:57--TSN is now back tracking on Peter Forsberg retirement notice.  Seems like he may not retire now.

Update 1:51--Peter Forsberg is going to announce his retirement tonight, reported by TSN.

Update 1:50--TSN reports the rumours of Dominic Moore to Chicago as being false.

Update 1:25--Tampa Bay Trade Mark Recchi
To Boston: Mark Recchi, 2010 2nd round pick
To Tampa Bay: Matt Lashoff, Martins Karsums
I like this deal.  Boston gets some secondary scoring, and also gets a good locker room leader who has won cups before.  Tampa also gets a couple of good young players here too.  Especially Lashoff, who will step in and help out a terrible Tampa Bay blueline.

Los Angeles Kings also re-sign Erik Esberg to a two-year deal.

Update 1:23--AM640 is reporting that Dominic Moore has been traded to Chicago, though there is no confirmed return, nor is the deal being talked about by TSN.  Also Tim Stapleton and Jonas Frogren have been returned to the Marlies.

Update 1:06--Jokinen deal is complete.
To Calgary: Olli Jokinen, 3rd round pick
To Phoenix: Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, 1st round pick (Calgary's choice of 09, or '10)

Update 12:55--TSN reports that Vesa Toskala is being placed on injured reserve for the rest of the season to have surgery on his hip and possibly his groin.
Toskala was told in advance of the Leafs' moves to claim Gerber.  Toskala said he will need four months to recover.

Update 12:40--Done Deal?
To Calgary--Olli Jokinen
To Phoenix--Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, and 1st round pick
TSN is calling this more or less done, but says Calgary has some cap issues they need to clear up first.  Still, Jokinen and Leopold is a solid day of additions for Darryl Sutter.

Update 12:39--Boston, Anaheim swing a deal
To Boston: Steve Montador
To Anaheim: Petteri Nokelainen
Great move for Boston to grab a solid, depth defenseman who adds toughness and grit to the team at a great price.

Update 12:33--TSN reports Olli Jokinen has been dealt to Calgary in exchange to Matthew Lombardi, a first round pick, and possibly Adrian Aucoin.  However, someone close to Jokinen says he doesn't know of a trade yet.

Update  12:29--TSN is reporting that Leafs players Jonas Frogren and Tim Stapleton are not on the ice in practice this morning.  No word yet on why they are absent.

UPDATE: 12:05 WAIVER WIRES
Toronto picks up Martin Gerber, and Erik Reitz off waivers
Dallas picks up Brenden Morrison off waivers
As a Leafs fan I want to jump off a cliff right now..but we'll see.  This move has to be a pre-cursor to a bigger deal, possibly involving a goalie, or perhaps to shut Toskala down, though he has played well as of late.  Reitz I don't know much about

Update 12:04--Phoenix and Buffalo Swing a Deal
To Buffalo: Mikael Tellqvist
To Phoenix: 4th round draft pick
A good move by the Sabres to grab Tellqvist who will help their goalie situation while Miller is out.

Update 11:47--Minor Deal
To St. Louis: Danny Richmond
To Pittsburgh: Andy Wozniewski

Update 11:39--Another Deal
To Calgary: Jordan Leopold
To Colorado--Lawrence Nycholat, 2nd round pick, Ryan Wilson
Jordan Leopold returns to Calgary for his second tour of duty.  With injuries ravaging the Flames blueline, they made a smart move going back to a trusted player they know can perform well for them.  A good puck mover, this could be a good deal for Calgary.

Update 11:26--Calgary and Phoenix are reportedly in deep negotiations to send Olli Jokinen to the Calgary Flames

Update 11:04--Leafs GM Brian Burke spoke to reporters saying he believes the team can take on some extra money to get assets and picks from other teams, though he is worried of taking any contracts that run through 2011.
He also said he is frustrated by the lack of activity.  "I wish we were all in a big room, I would grab someone by the neck and get something done."

Update 10:47--Buffalo Sabres re-sign Tim Connolly to a two-year deal worth $9 million.

Update 10:40--Leafs GM Brian Burke is on TSN and confirms that Dominic Moore and Nik Antropov will be traded today.  Burke also confirmed he had offers for some other players, but wouldn't elaborate on who the players are.

Update 10:09--Talks between Dominic Moore and the Maple Leafs have broken off.  He is now considered in play and is likely to be dealt before 3 p.m.

Update 9:55--FIRST DEAL!
To Ottawa: Pascal Leclaire, 2nd round draft pick
To Columbus: Antoine Vermette
A decent trade that could work out for both teams.  Leclaire has shown he can play at a high level in this league, but the injury bug has taken a big bite out of his career.
I say it through clenched teeth, but it looks as though Ottawa could have made a good deal here.  Leclaire's health is the key though.

Update 9:51--TSN is now confirming the Filip Kuba deal.  Kuba signs a three-year extension with the Senators to remain in Ottawa.  The deal is will see Kuba make $3.7 million per year.

Update 9:48--According to the Ottawa Sun, Filip Kuba has signed an extension with the Senators.  This is unconfirmed by any of the major networks.

Update 9:38--TSN's Bob McKenzie says rumours of Vancouver sending Bieksa, Raymond and 1st round pick to Florida for Bouwmeester are false.

Update 9:37-- Sportsnet is reporting that Philadelphia is the front runner for Jay Bouwmeester, while Vancouver has also had discussions with the Panthers.

Update 9:35 AM--According to some, things are really beginning to pick up, though it could take a little bit to materialize.  Updates have been a little sparse, but will pick up once the deals begin to roll through.  Stick with us, it will be worth it.

Update 8:57 AM--It looks as though the first hour of coverage will go through without a deal.  Fear not, however, as it is looking to be a busy day.  Not only do we have the trade deadline, but also keep an eye on the players on the waiver wire.

Update 8:30 AM--Sportsnet is reporting that there are six to seven teams, including San Jose, who have interest in Leafs centre Dominic Moore.

Update 8:22 AM--The Leafs will practice today at noon, Kaberle will not join them, as he is going for X-rays on his hand.

Update 8:21 AM--LA Kings re-sign Sean O'Donnell (1 year, $1.25 million).

8:06 AM--Late night/early morning updates
  • Vancouver re-signs Alex Burrows (4 years, $8 million)
  • Ducks GM Bob Murray says Chris Pronger is not available.

That's it for now.  It's still very early.  Stay with me all day long as I break news and trades as they happen!
