Fergie Plays It Cool with Talk Of Quintuple for Manchester United

Daniel GoochMar 2, 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson was quick to stop the talk about a United quintuple after his team won the Carling Cup against Tottenham Hotspur.

As well as winning the Carling Cup they have won the Club World Cup, meaning they are the best club in world (as if we needed proof).

United have a convincing lead in the Premier League, almost booked their place in the Champions League quarter-final, and looking good in the FA Cup. I would be surprised if they didn't walk away with a least one of these.

Ferguson feels that the media will be talking about it a lot in the near future.

"I'm not getting carried away with it, only the media will. We will keep our feet on the ground."

In a press conference after the Carling Cup Final, Sir Alex said of his thoughts about the FA Cup:

"We could go to Fulham in the FA Cup, the ball comes off someone's backside and we are out of that one."

Tottenham boss, Harry Redknapp, believes United have what it takes to go all the way:

"They have got a big chance - they are the team to beat for sure."

"They have a fantastic squad. They have one cup already (actually two), it looks as if the league is going their way and you wouldn't bet against them in the Champions League and the FA Cup."

There was praise for United's goalkeeper, Ben Foster, as he made to winning saves in the penalty shoot out.

"In the end it came down to the goalkeepers and our one made a great save," said Mike Phelan, United's assistant manager.

The future is his,"

"The present belongs to Edwin Van der Sar, that is obvious, but that performance can only strengthen my opinion of Ben's ability and his own self-confidence."

In an innovative move, Foster admitted to watching videos of Spurs players taking spot-kicks on goalkeeping coach Eric Steele's iPod after extra-time, which helped him during the penalty shoot-out.
