Manchester City: 3 Reasons EPL Champs Are Winners of the Summer Transfer Window

0 of 3

Manchester City enjoyed an extremely successful campaign in 2011-12.

They took home the Barclays English Premier League title and won the Manchester Derby in April. The transfer window recently closed, and City made moves to continue competing in both the EPL and the Champions League.

With main contributors Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri returning, the new additions to Man City should keep them among Europe's best.

Manchester City was already a phenomenal team, but then City went out and added Javi Garcia, Maicon, Scott Sinclair and Matija Nastasic.

These additions make Manchester City the winners of the Summer Transfer Window.

Improved Offensive Attack

Manchester City already had a solid attack and counter-attack last season. Then they went and added Javi Garcia, a midfielder from Benfica. Garcia is regarded as an exceptional player, and City paid like he was one.

The transfer fee of €20.2 million, roughly $25.4 million, was the fourth most expensive fee in the transfer window.

Garcia is only 25 years old, and he just now entering the prime of his career. The defensive midfielder isn't the fastest player on the pitch, but he is exceptionally strong and does well at marking.

He plays well in the counter-attack and is above-average at passing. For corners Javi is outstanding and he is very good at headers, consistently putting the ball on net.

They also added left winger Scott Sinclair from Swansea. Sinclair doesn't figure to be a starter, but he will be a solid contributor off the bench. He plays very fast and is an above-average dribbler. His elite speed allows him to draw attention because he can break past the defense at any time.

That is just in addition to their already strong set of attacking players. Sergio Aguero is among the elite in the world. He is extremely fast and knows how to score goals.

Mario Balotelli had somewhat of a breakout campaign in his EPL and Champions League campaigns. Balotelli showed tremendous finishing ability, and when he had his head on straight, he was arguably the best player on the pitch at any time.

It seems like Carlos Tevez is getting up there in years, but at only 28 he still has a lot of time ahead of him. He has started strong this season and if he keeps it up City will an amazing attack.

Stellar Defense Got Even Better

2 of 3

Manchester City was already regarded as having one of the best defenses in the Premier League. The play of Vincent Kompany, Gael Clichy, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards and Kolo Toure is as steady as it gets.

Then City went out and got well-established defender Maicon. A right-back by trade, Maicon is one of the few players in the world who can dominate his side of the pitch. He plays a very penetrative style, forcing his will on his opponent.

There aren't many players as good as Maicon. He should be among Manchester City's first-choice XI.

Kompany is one of Man City's best players, and one of the best defenders in the world. He is a very versatile player who is comfortable at both center-back and defensive midfielder. He played exceptionally well in the Champions League and has made himself a regular starter for City.

Manchester City also looked to get younger, and by signing Matija Nastasic they did just that. The 19-year-old Serbian broke onto the scene last year with Fiorentina. As a center-back Nastasic is considered one of the best defending prospects in the world.

He won't be an everyday starter for Manchester City, but his ability speaks for itself. He should see the pitch frequently when the regular starters are fatigued, and experience in the EPL will only help him to improve.

Continued Momentum

Manchester City has momentum on their side. After a fantastic finish to last season, the Sky Blues are poised to continue their display of dominance.

They came out of the summer transfer window with an improved team. The starting XI figure to remain almost the same, but they added a lot of depth and look to be in it for the long run.

Thus far in the 2012-2013 EPL season, Manchester City has seven points from two wins and a draw.

Mario Balotelli has only played in one match too, so Man City will just now be returning to full strength. ESPN is reporting that Balotelli is set to return for City's Champions League game against Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. Super Mario is a difference maker on City's attack, and his presence should make Real Madrid a little uneasy.

Carlos Tevez appears to be back in top-form. In just three EPL fixtures Tevez has hammered 12 shots, putting six on target, and has found the back of the net three times.

Sergio Aguero has also only played in one match after suffering a minor knee injury. But he should be back very soon, and he will make an immediate impact for City. Aguero is great in ball control and nearly unstoppable in the box. He is an excellent finisher and is considered a world-class player.

Manchester City has a lot going for them. With the success of last season and the additions made this transfer window, City is on track to be back at the top of the Premier League. I expect them to make a lot of noise in the Champions League as well.
